almost AM radio sounding mixes

If mixes continually come out rather flat, almost an AM radio type of sound, what might be the cause?

My mixes tend to have this problem, and I've heard many other home recordings or amatuer recordings that have this problem.

Maybe someone who masters recordings would have some clues on typical mistakes that lead to this.

can you be more specific as to what this sound is? when I think of a "flat" mix, that is something that I would normally strive for!

I suppose almost like an AM radio preset, which usually cuts the lows and the highs, right? Or think maybe mixes from the 70s.

But the lows are there, the highs are there. It's almost as if the mix needs to be wider in a vertical way, if that makes any sense.

Perhaps it's too much in the 3k area?

Can anyone relate to what I'm talking about?

It could be that infamous presence range disguising higher frequencies; it could be flabby bass. It could also be too mono.

Post a sample somewhere (like soundclick.com) - you'll get much better suggestions.

It's probably the combination of equipment and the room you are recording and/or mixing in.
That's typically the problem with home studio mixes.

From the title I figured 'radio = no dynamics. But you're not smashing?
