For the money, Nady just can't be beat. So I'm going to open an all-Nady studio. Envy this gear list:

Mics:

The heart of a studio is its mics. Or maybe it's the console. Ah hell, it's the mics. And the most important factor is to have a selection of mics to suit different vocalists. I picked:

Nady TCM-1100 Vacuum Tube Condenser Mic, $200. It provides the long life, subtle sonic detail, and unsurpassed warmth of tone that defines the best tube microphones.

Nady RSM-2 Studio Ribbon Mic, $320. It offers the unique natural sound previously only available on such classic large ribbon mics.

Nady SCM-1000 Mic, $100. An all-purpose studio and live performance recording mic.

Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic, $63. A dynamic mic with great performance characteristics and a look straight out of the '40s and '50s!

in addition to those high-end mics, you need a few basic dynamics, 'cause for some singers, that's what sounds best:

3 Nady SP-33 Dynamic Mics, $20. It has a lively full-range response with punchy bass; articulate mids; and detailed, crisp highs.

For instruments I've got:

4 Nady DM70 Drum & Instrument Mics, $40. Ideal for live and studio close-miking of all types of drums and percussion instruments, and also for accurate sonic reproduction of brass, woodwind, and other instruments producing high sound pressure levels.

Nady DM-90 Dynamic Kick Drum Mic, $60. Specially designed for the most accurate reproduction of extended low-frequency instruments and amps.

2 Nady CM 90 Cardioid Condenser Mics, $50. Great for recording or reinforcing acoustic guitars, hi-hats, snares, piano, and horns. Perfect as an overhead drum mic.

Nady SP-4C, only $10, just for a talkback mic. No need to blow the budget here.

2 Nady pop filters, $20.

10 Nady MST-5B mic stands, $15.

2 Nady SSM-3 Shock mount, $39.

OK, the mic locker costs a total of $1,341. It was expensive, but I felt that quality was paramount, so I made some tough choices like the CM90s over the CM88s, and the TCM-1100 over the TCM-1050. The good news budgetwise is that most of the mics come with free cables!

On to the rack:

Nady CMX16A Mixer, $300. This compact console and rackmountable mixer delivers top performance, full-functioned flexibility, and ultimate value and is ideal for even the most demanding mixing applications. Full-frequency response, wide dynamic range, and ultra low noise assure natural, transparent sound with maximum headroom. I don't think you want to skimp on pres so I picked the top of the line board.

For the 'gold channel':

Nady TMP-3 Tube Channel with Preamp / EQ / Compressor, $195.

and for when you need a little 'color' in stereo:

Nady TMP-2 Rackmount Stereo Tube Mic Preamp, $150.

more outboard gear:

2 Nady PEQ-5 5-Band Parametric EQ, $110.

Nady MSE-100A Multiband Sound Enhancement Processor, $90. Provides subjective loudening, and improves intelligibility, bass punch, presence, and transparency. Simultaneous enhancer and exciter effects!

Nady SDP-20 Programmable Digital Multi-Effects Processor, $135. Dual-engine DSP processor offers 256 of the latest and most useful effects presets.

Nady HPA-4 Headphone amp, $100.

Nady GEQ231, Dual 31 Band Graphic Equalizer, $150. Perfect for 'balancing' my 'monitors' to 'fix' my 'room'.

Nady PB48 Patch Bay, $50.

Nady SPA-850 Pro Stereo Power Amp, $250. Just because I don't know what the hell active monitors are.

Nady SM-250 Active Studio Monitor, $200.

2 Nady DB-1 Direct Boxes, $27.

4 Nady QH560 Deluxe Studio Headphones--Buy One Get One Free, 2 for $50!

OK, for all the gear, that's $1,994, for a total of $3,335! With prices that low, I can get tons of business by undercutting all of my competitors. I'm only going to charge minimum wage.

As soon as Nady introduces a hard disk recorder . . .

:D :D :D :D :D

Awesome.

They have released a picture of their disk drive, sourced from a reputable manufacturer. It's extra heavy design keeps the needle from skipping, even during eathquakes.

That looks a LOT more durable than the one I've got on my computer!

Maybe with all that Nady gear you can get an endorsement deal.
Call Fetcher and see if you can get a bulk discount on this stuff.

I was doing real well keeping a straight face until the words "gold channel" appeared.

You should be able to charge $5 an hour easily with that gear! Maybe even $6 ... once a Nady 24 track comes out ... you'll be rolling in cash! :-)

Man that's funny.... So much anti-behringer sentiment (for numerous reasons) I almost forgot about Nady.

Are you planning to add some Rogue house amps in that setup? Perhaps some Kay guitars to offer your clients as well in lieu of their PRS and Gibsons? Funny! :D Unfortunately, I did buy the SM-250s for my home setup, but CLEARLY as a temporary solution until I get the cash for some Alesis or Yamahas. I doubted the decision at first, until my 2-year old son pushed in the cones of the ferro-fluid cooled tweeters. Thank God that wasn't a pair of Mackies! I would never have seen it coming!

Starpower!!

Starpower!!!!

(sorry, I just like saying Starpower, because...what a kickass name for a mic.)

STARPOWER!!!!

Nady stuff

I personally this it is a bad idea to buy all Nady mics. Mics to a recording engineer are like colors of paint to a painter. and if you buy all nady mics..its like having 3 colors instead of a whole rainbow of colors. There are all kinds of cheap mics that will add color to your recordings.

Lots of good and crappy mics.

Hey now, my karoke machine came with 3 PROFESSIONAL "Starpower" Mics so I'd appreciate you being a little more careful when slinging your dis-like!

If you get a chance can you update the prices so we can see how they have changed over the years.

Rock On Nady.

I have a TCM 1100, which I bought for $175 from MF, dug a lot for a while, got bored with, replaced with a Rode NTK and sold to a buddy, replaced the NTK, bought the TCM 1100 back from said buddy and then sent to Dave Thomas of Advanced Audio a few weeks ago to pimp out. I already paid for a Peluso capsule to be put in and and for the tube/tube circuit and capacitors to be upgraded ($220) and I bought a new power supply from Shinybox for about $60 shipped and an upgraded cable (Mogami 7 pin) from Redco for about $60 shipped. I got the PS from ShinyBox today and it's a Multipattern one, so I just wrote to Mr. Thomas and asked if he could put in the double sided Peluso instead (only about another $10). He told me that the tranny in the 1100 is better than the ones in the Apex 460/TCM 1050, so I opted not to get it upgraded at the time I sent it to him, but now that I have a little bit of $, I want to swap it out for a Cinemag. All in all, with shipping, I'm looking at sinking $460 into pimping out a mic that originally cost me $175, for a total of $635 on a Nady TCM 1100. Gear Modification Syndrome (G.M.S.) sucks/rules! :) :(

Now all we need is for someone to start an all Behringer studio!! Hmmm... I got a pretty good start, maybe I will. But then I would have to relocate Behringer itself or an ALL BEHRINGER MUSIC STORE for replacements!!

I might re-think that idea!!
