For the money, Nady just can't be beat. So I'm going to open an all-Nady studio. Envy this gear list:
Mics:
The heart of a studio is its mics. Or maybe it's the console. Ah hell, it's the mics. And the most important factor is to have a selection of mics to suit different vocalists. I picked:
Nady TCM-1100 Vacuum Tube Condenser Mic, $200. It provides the long life, subtle sonic detail, and unsurpassed warmth of tone that defines the best tube microphones.
Nady RSM-2 Studio Ribbon Mic, $320. It offers the unique natural sound previously only available on such classic large ribbon mics.
Nady SCM-1000 Mic, $100. An all-purpose studio and live performance recording mic.
Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic, $63. A dynamic mic with great performance characteristics and a look straight out of the '40s and '50s!
in addition to those high-end mics, you need a few basic dynamics, 'cause for some singers, that's what sounds best:
3 Nady SP-33 Dynamic Mics, $20. It has a lively full-range response with punchy bass; articulate mids; and detailed, crisp highs.
For instruments I've got:
4 Nady DM70 Drum & Instrument Mics, $40. Ideal for live and studio close-miking of all types of drums and percussion instruments, and also for accurate sonic reproduction of brass, woodwind, and other instruments producing high sound pressure levels.
Nady DM-90 Dynamic Kick Drum Mic, $60. Specially designed for the most accurate reproduction of extended low-frequency instruments and amps.
2 Nady CM 90 Cardioid Condenser Mics, $50. Great for recording or reinforcing acoustic guitars, hi-hats, snares, piano, and horns. Perfect as an overhead drum mic.
Nady SP-4C, only $10, just for a talkback mic. No need to blow the budget here.
2 Nady pop filters, $20.
10 Nady MST-5B mic stands, $15.
2 Nady SSM-3 Shock mount, $39.
OK, the mic locker costs a total of $1,341. It was expensive, but I felt that quality was paramount, so I made some tough choices like the CM90s over the CM88s, and the TCM-1100 over the TCM-1050. The good news budgetwise is that most of the mics come with free cables!
On to the rack:
Nady CMX16A Mixer, $300. This compact console and rackmountable mixer delivers top performance, full-functioned flexibility, and ultimate value and is ideal for even the most demanding mixing applications. Full-frequency response, wide dynamic range, and ultra low noise assure natural, transparent sound with maximum headroom. I don't think you want to skimp on pres so I picked the top of the line board.
For the 'gold channel':
Nady TMP-3 Tube Channel with Preamp / EQ / Compressor, $195.
and for when you need a little 'color' in stereo:
Nady TMP-2 Rackmount Stereo Tube Mic Preamp, $150.
more outboard gear:
2 Nady PEQ-5 5-Band Parametric EQ, $110.
Nady MSE-100A Multiband Sound Enhancement Processor, $90. Provides subjective loudening, and improves intelligibility, bass punch, presence, and transparency. Simultaneous enhancer and exciter effects!
Nady SDP-20 Programmable Digital Multi-Effects Processor, $135. Dual-engine DSP processor offers 256 of the latest and most useful effects presets.
Nady HPA-4 Headphone amp, $100.
Nady GEQ231, Dual 31 Band Graphic Equalizer, $150. Perfect for 'balancing' my 'monitors' to 'fix' my 'room'.
Nady PB48 Patch Bay, $50.
Nady SPA-850 Pro Stereo Power Amp, $250. Just because I don't know what the hell active monitors are.
Nady SM-250 Active Studio Monitor, $200.
2 Nady DB-1 Direct Boxes, $27.
4 Nady QH560 Deluxe Studio Headphones--Buy One Get One Free, 2 for $50!
OK, for all the gear, that's $1,994, for a total of $3,335! With prices that low, I can get tons of business by undercutting all of my competitors. I'm only going to charge minimum wage.
As soon as Nady introduces a hard disk recorder . . .
