Hello everyone. I've taken a course in Audio Engineering and have a bit of a plan. I'd like to have a relatively mobile studio, so I could do demos for bands in their jam spaces - as setting up my own full studio isn't anywhere near affordable.
I first thought about getting a Digi003 Rack and a laptop, but realised I'm much more comfortable with the physical controls of a mixing board and would need more mic inputs to record drums.
My next thought was an all-in-one studio, like the Korg D3200 or the Roland VS2400, which I am still considering. However, recently, a Tascam DM-24 showed up in a local music store, with the Firewire card and additional TDIF card installed - for $1200. Seeing the myriad amount of connectors on the back (which would allow my studio to grow), the 24-bit recording, and the 16 XLR inputs. "That's it!" I thought.
...Alas, nothing is ever that simple. Upon further investigation, I discovered this was a Digital Mixer, and had no hard drive in it. I could hook it up to a laptop through firewire, but I'd have to 1) Buy a laptop 2) Deal with the slower RPM drive in the laptop.
So, long story long, I have a question:
Can I hook up an external FW drive to this and have it record the audio directly onto it, maintaining the tracks as seperate files? Or do I have to go through Logic/Pro Tools/Whatever?
Basically my plan is to: 1) record individual parts with band 2) Fix up parts in hardware/software at home and assemble 3) Burn finished demos to CD, give to client.
Is there an easier way I could go about this?
Thanks for all your help - I realize this isn't the simplist question!
