I'm running an AMD Athlon 1.4ghz with an Asus A7X motherboard with a VAI chipset. The OS is Windows 2000 Pro (service pack 3). I recently installed a Delta 1010LT with no problems.
You didn't mention which operating system you are running, but I'm not sure it makes a difference either way.
I also read the same reports about the VAI chipset problems. I believe both Delta and VAI have fixed the problems. Delta is not shy about releasing new drivers, and the newer VAI chipsets don't have the same problems any more. Since my motherboard is about 2 years old, I was concerned though. Before I installed the Delta, I updated the BIOS to the newest version, and I also made sure I had the newest drivers from MAudio.
I do get a crackle every once in a while, but it's not a chipset issue. My system starts to hiccup at about 30 stero tracks with a few effects running. The problems are hard drive related (simply not fast enough). Overall, I'm very happy with the 1010.
Something else to ponder on... Get whatever soundcard you want. Get one that will satisfy your needs (and then some). If you do have a problem with cracks/pops, you should first try the myriad of tweaks available to fix it. More memory, faster hard drive, OS fixes, driver updates. Do all of that good stuff first. Then, if you still have a problem and you're convinced it's the chipset, go get another motherboard. For much less than $200 (US$), you can get a motherboard that can handle the best processors on the market. If you want to save some cash, get one that can use the same RAM and processor you already own. Then when you have the cash, you can upgrade one piece at a time.
My computer started life as an 800 Mhz Duron with 128 MB ram and a 10 gig harddrive. I've since upgraded everything but the motherboard. Video card(s), Ram, soud card (been through a few of those), hard drives (there's 4 of them now), CD burner, DVD player, case, power supply, fans, have all been replaced as prices on the newer, better stuff got cheaper. If you don't want to spend too much all at once, and you don't mind doing a little research, you can pretty much upgrade forever. My next upgrade will in fact be the motherboard so I can eventually upgrade to a 2 or 3 Ghz processor.
