alesis sr16

i'm thinking of getting the sr16 to lay down some basic beats to my demos, i'm working with a drummer as the songs progress, so i'm looking for something to play around with as i only meet the drummer every other day, (the drummer hates drum machines so there was no point in asking him about it), the drum styles i'm looking for are rock/funk/reggae, i have heard people say its good and others say its crap, if there is a better alternative of similar value like the boss dr5, what would ye recommend.
of those that have one out of 10 what do ye rate the alesis sr16 and why??
 
if you don't mind a bunch of 80's type drum samples, then the sr16 could be for you. it's just a basic drum machine, nothing special. i hated the trigger pads so i used a casio keyboard to trigger it. i owned one maybe 10-12 years ago. if you're gettin it for $50 or less, go for it. otherwise, get something newer.
 
noone uses the alesis sr16 then...... apart from travisinflorida and it was years ago when he used it..... or is it that bad ye just aint bothered sayin......

guess i'll go with the boss dr5 :D
 
I have an SR 16. It makes a killer click track. It's decent for specific effect, but will suck ass for rock/funk/reggae, as will any drum machine.

Your drummer is right, which is odd.

The easiest way to get great drum tracks is to spend a few grand on drums, take a couple of years to learn how to play them, then a couple more years to learn how to mic them. It might sound like a lot of work, but it's easier than having a drummer in your band.
 
i think ezwillis likes drummers as much as the sr16
 
coming up with a few grand now thats a bit of a problem, but i know how to play drums but would'nt class myself as a drummer not compared to the drummer i play with anyway, im a guitarist/songwriter....
i just wanted something to arse about on in my spare time, tought it was a good idea obviously its not if you cant do simple drum rhythms in the styles i mentioned, i'm not looking for a click track my recorder can do that........

You can do simple drum rhythms with any drum machine, it's all about what you're looking for. If you're trying to emulate a drummer for recordings, get a drummer. If you are just looking for something to assist in the songwriting, get a drum machine. The sr16 is fine for that.
