Hi, folks.

I'm planning to pick up a drum machine sometime soon for recording & possibly gigging (me being a hermit & drummers hard to come by even for people with "connections").

From what I understand, the Alesis SR-16 is an affordable & fairly versatile model, its collection of super-wet '80's drum sounds notwithstanding. I read a user review on harmony central that made an oblique reference I wanted to follow up on. So, anyhow, my question:

Is it possible to program 3/4 time beats on the SR-16?

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Any drum machine worth anything at all will handle 3/4 time.... :)

I havve an old SR-16 that I use mainly for a fancy metronome. Yes, you can program 3/4 time. You don't set a time signature per se, but you specify how many beats to the pattern - up to 128 beats! For the typical 4/4 time, they have a 2-bar pattern, so it's set to 8 beats. If you wanted 3/4 time, you could set it to 3 beats, or 6 beats for a 2-bar pattern, or 12 beats for a 4-bar pattern. See what I mean? So, you can get really strange times if you want, like 7/8, or 15/16. I've seen a song with alternating bars of 7/8 and 8/8. That could be programmed into the SR-16 with a 15 beat pattern.

Yo Loser of Your Cores:

Hey man; the SR16 is old stuff; try the Boss 770 Box; or try any others that are newer that the SR16. As soon as I plugged in my 770, I shut down the SR16 [ not a bad box] and have never turned it back on. The 770 is so rich in sounds and rhythms, especially Latin stuff. Do you just want to do Waltz time? Well, as mentioned by my astute colleagues, you can program almost any drum machine to do a one, and a two, and a three....hey I like waltzes too, but, I don't record too many of them.

Year ago, when I was gigging with my trio, we had a waltz set and I ran all over the classic waltzes and those of more modern declension; but, I don't do much waltz time today in my studio.

But, do what you like to do and enjoy it; that's what music is===enjoyment.

The Boss 770 is one heck of a box.
