would these be any good for monitoring, i would also intend to use the alesis with PA speakers as a PA seperately.
I dont have much cash and will struggle to afford these two items.

does anyone know of a cheap price for these or any other alternantives. I have seen a pair of NS-10M's for £240 about US$360 and the alesis for $299 at music123.com . is there any other cheaper alternatives for monitors, cheaper would be better.

Thanks all for any help.

If you will only have the NS-10M's as your primary monitoring system, I recommend not getting those monitors. There are many more better choices out now.

Event 20 20's for $299. The Alesis probably wouldn't cut it for PA use- maybe check out amps from Samson if you are budget minded (like all of us)

well im using the ra-100 with the alesis monitor 1's and they seem great .. But like james said , i dont thing they cut it for a pa .. maybe for rehearsals(as last resort) as a vocalk amp but thats about it..
but i like the versatilty of an external amp.. just another opinion..
cheers

NS-10M's will probably not sound very good in your room ,mainly because there ment for Acoustcally matched enviroments like a properly setup control room...

And the RA-100 and Monitor 1's are a matched pair....this is what I would use

um, when i say PA use i think i actually mean what you suggest at a rehearsal for the mics mainly, i am not looking for hugely loud music as i am only 16 in a small crappy band.

The problem i have (amoung others) is lack of money so i cannot afford a seperate amp for PA and for moitors (or active moniters), hell i dont even know if i can afford that, but ill find a way. so as you can gather i am a tad strapped for cash being a skint teenager an all.

i have a athlon 550 PC with a sound blaster live 1024 and a terratec ews 88mt 8 input/8 output soundcard, i have a small mixer, the samson mixpad 4, i have a yamaha cs1x synth and a squier strat guitar, at the moment i am using a reasonably high quality seperates hi-fi for moitoring in a multi purpose room, dont tell me, i know i know that a hi-fi dont cut it, but im working towards better.

plus i am getting a new little room for my use, cool!

i practise with me metal band at a warehouse containg various guitar amps , a marshall jcm 900 i think with two 4x12 cabinates (actually i tihnk one of them is a 2x12 in a 4x12 size cabinet), and a h/h 100watt 2x12 combo, also a sm58 plus another crappy mic, umm a drumkit and a battered old 16 channel mixer and a boss turbo distortion and turbo overdrive, a compressino sustainer and a korg overdrive , and some blues thingy aswell, plus my new boss vf-1 soon and a PA sometime.

ok i dont know why i felt i had to blab all of that shit but i guess it might help if u you guys feeling like helping me out.
also what would you reckon would be the best setup for that , i know it aint ideal not having a PA for the mic, we're running the mic though the mixer out to the h/h on a clean setting to act as a PA kind of like and then using the m,arshall for a guitar and with the pedals somewhere about the place also.

thank you all in advance for the great advice, it will (has) really helped me!!!

yorkville ysm-1's for $79 each

hey, if you want to save cash - forget the yamahas - go with yorkville ysm-1's for $79 each from wheaton music - search this board for yorkville and you will find lots of people with great things to say about these monitors - they also have a near-perfect track record as far as pro-reviews go - everyone seems to think they are an incredible steal for the money and have increadibly deeper/more accurate bass and less fatiguing high end than the yamahas. The "reveiws" section at http://www.yorkville.com has links to the electronic musician and proaudio review articles. Wheaton music online has the best prices by far (I just ordered a set last week, and you can even order a yorkville magnetic shielding kit from them for $10 a monitor) - search yahoo for "wheaton music" to track those guys down - you can order by phone, and they don't charge for shipping.

For amps, the alesis is a good value and a good match for the ysm-1's, but samson amps are even cheaper and should do the job well enough. You can probably get a good 70wpc one used for like $150 if you're lucky.

So the whole package would be about $350 if you play your cards right, and should outperform the ns-10 setup you were thinking about.

I'm coming from left field here raindrops but do you really need to spend extra on your speakers?? - A good set of hifi speakers are OK if you are used to them and know them. Studios put up known brands so that clients feel comfortable with something they know like NS10s but you don't have any clients to appease!! why not spend any money you have on some waves plugins or the like?? With metal you need every effect you can get!!

I hear ya

I second that, if you have speakers on which music you like sounds good too you - use 'em - just keep them at least 10 inches from the screen. The main advantages of studio monitors in home use is that they are specifically designed to be used at close range and are usually less fatiguing to the ear than home hifi's - but if you can hear what you need to hear at a distance that is comfortable - and they don't make your ears ache - then save the cash if you're on a strict budget.

I'm on a tight budget too, but I don't have any speakers that I really like, and my space situation dictates sheilded monitors - thus. . . . . shielded ysm-1's hooked to my NAD int. amp.

However, studio monitors are different in sound and design than your average home hifi - studios use those instead of klipsch or advents because they work - not to impress people (they pay too much for overpriced brands to impress people, but it's not like they'ed use home hifi's given the choice).
