Probably. Get what you can afford. Among others I have some Alesis M1's and they work. I'm not sure why one would want DSP and speaker emulation on their monitors, but whatever... 
I guess I shouldn't knock it just because I wouldn't use it. For first monitors they probably will do the trick just fine. I, personally, really like powered monitors as well.
Don't forget to save some of your money for software.
