i have a alesis USB mixer....

i want to achive better sound quality ( www.myspace.com/jsparksnj ) is it possible to NOT use the usb part of the mixer lol like just use the mixer as a mixer and output it to like a firewire interface? basically like not pluging the mixer into the computer

Yes, this would be possible by connecting your mixer's output channels to the input channels of the FW-interface.

However, the USB-interface embedded in the mixer is probably NOT your problem. Usually bad sound quality comes primarily from bad rooms, bad mic-placement, erroneous EQ-settings, etc

Then comes the preamps in the mixer and then, last comes the actual interface before the computer...

First of all, what kind of mic are you using?

the pre-amps in the multimix are pretty poor...might be worth investing in a good mic pre-amp.
