I heard that using the Alesis Multimix 8 USB with Logic on my MacBook will not allow more than two track simultaneous recording because the USB cannot process it. Is this true? I am thinking it is true because i can't seem to assign more than 2 inputs. Any help?

The Alesis Multimix 8USB will only allow 2 inputs and 2 out puts via USB, but this is not because of a USB limitation. It is the way the multimix is intended to be. The USB of the multimix only sends the stereo output of the mains to a computer ( stereo that's why 2 channels). It also can receive a stereo input from your computer.

The multimix is not meant to replace an audio interface. It's USB is just a way to get the main into a computer and a stereo output from the computer without going through a soundcard. The best way to think of it is that the USB is the same as the line in and line out. If you had an interface, you would use 1/4" left and right cables from the main out to the soundcard. You would also use 1/4" left and right cables from the sound card to the multimix to feed it audio such as from an ipod etc. This is all the USB on the multimix is for.

If you want dedicated channels into your DAW and/or multiple inputs, you will have to look at getting a true multichannel interface. New USB2.0 interfaces can have up to 8 and possibly 16 similtaneous inputs. It has pretty much caught up to firewire and when USB3 comes out it will probably exceed firewire capabilities.

you only get 2 channels with Alesis Multimix 8USB. However, with Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 you will get 8

I was considering this product, but chose the Tascam M-164UF
Gives 16 channels to PC .. CH 1 to 10 + FX 1&2, Sub LR, Stereo LR = 16 @ 24/48
and it's a 16 channel analog mixer with Sub Mix & Stereo Mix, and what you're recording doesn't have to be in the mix, it can be heard in The Return, if you're using an Amp Sim or soft synth

Ummm...you've just defined an audio interface. :D

Well, I mean, ah, well, suppose like, uh, well, yes, yes I did! and I meant to dam it! LOL

I guess I meant it is not a multi-channel interface (even though technically 2 is a multi and 3some are awesome!)

Talking about Alesis mutimixes (which you were) I wonder if I can just ask some advice from anyone using them. After much boring and painful research I narrowed down what I need (both as an audio interface for my laptop and for live use) to the Alesis Multimix 8 usb 2 or the same in firewire version.
The problem is that buyers reviews say the usb 2.0 version runs really hot and statements like "I don't know how it would behave on a long session" bug me somewhat since I live in Italy which itself gets really hot in the summer! This goy me looking into the firewire version but the problem is that my lap top can only have firewire 400 fitted (or so I've been told by the computer shop) so my question is: Would this be fast enough? Is it worth spending the extra money on the firewire version and can I be sure that this version won't overheat as well?
