Waiting for the HD24 has been to much of a hassle for young BLISS, MACKIE has the MDR24/96 at the same price, and I think he is going to buy it, let's see how this unfolds.

(Curtains draw back)

(ACT I)
Baby! I know you have the ins and outs I need, but your momma wont let you go, " Wait for me" she said, "Wait"
I cant wait no longer girl, I've got to move on, you wasting my time, telling me you coming home with me July, Aug, Sept, now you telling me mid October, bitch please.
I put up money for you, $2000.00, and I had a place to put you up in.

(grabbing at my pant leg) get off me, I hear MACKIE is gonna give me what I need, right now for the same price, yeah! maybe I have to put out more cause she has additional pieces to assimulate in her fine exterior, but she's willing to move in RIGHT NOW.

(ACT II)

No! No! you cant do this to me, It's not my fault I didnt think to grow with the market, girls like TASCAM MX2424 and MACKIE HDR24/96 new what people wanted, prancing in there 24--96K bit resolution with cut/copy/paste/removable drives (crying)
I know, I know I'm not worth your time, I've put you off for so long
"Damn right woman" I dont need you, I'm gonna sell your sisters
LX20, LX20 and XT to anyone who will pay for there time & hours
then I'll make deep passionate love to MDR24/96 by pushing every last one of her buttons.

NO, NO, NO, NO, Nooooooooooooo............

(the cash register rings, transaction occurs, as BLISS walks out of the store with a spanking new MDR24/96 with 3 optical cards)

(CURTAINS CLOSE) applause

I played the lead in that play a month ago... pretty funny that I was a big supporter in Alesis, and used to be fast with such great lines as, "no no, it will be out this month, that one guy said so" or "oh, look! there's an ad for it in Mix magazine, that means it will be out soon, right?!" I ended up being one of the first five people with an MDR.

I did keep my ADAT though. It still works and I still use it.

Well, its pretty damn cool. It sounds great, and its easy to use. I've yet to really work with any of the front panel editing tools, as I mainly use a PC for all of my editing. The main thing I've heard people say is that it has a noisy system fan. I don't think it is bad at all, especially compared to my PC fan noise. It seems really solid. The cards are easy to change out. And it integrated very well with my existing ADAT system by using a JL Cooper Datamaster. Plenty of undo levels. The max drive size of 30gb is something I'm hoping they will fix, but it isn't hindering me any for now, it would just be nice to plug an 80 gig in and forget about it for a while. The only things I see on it that really sucks are the demo songs it comes with, PU. You really can't beat it for the price, though.

Question...Automaton

Now you say it can synch to your ADAT setup, I'm going to buy one this friday, what I'm going to do is, sell my (2) LX20 and keep one (XT20) with the MDR, now I still have a BRC, will it still sync via BRC or will I have to buy the REMOTE 24 ?

Because there wont be a 9 pin going from the ADAT to the MDR
how will that work?

I will buy it anyway (credit card) to see how it will work, cause if not I can take it back. just to save space, tapes and time, cutting and pasting would be lovely, but not if it's going to be a hassle.

Please respond soon... (trying to get as much info as possible)

The remote 24, which I am planning on buying, is, to my knowledge just a remote. Basically the equivalant to the ADAT LRC, with the exception that you have ALL of your front panel controls on it (including track arming, YAY!), and it only has a Category 5 cable from it that attaches to the appropriate remote connection on the rear panel.

I've never really used the BRC before, but I believe it has SMPTE connections on it, right? If so you should still be able to use it the same as I am using my Datamaster, using the ADAT as a master (I tried it with the MDR as a master, but the ADAT will have to play catch up). I also tried to configure it using MIDI coming out of the Datamaster (which I think you can do with the BRC) but that didn't work so well. The MDR would drop out every now and then. So you would have the 9-pins connected in a loop from the ADAT to the BRC and then a SMPTE connection, via a 1/4" cable, running into the MDR. You'll set it up in the menu for the MDR to chase SMPTE and hit the chase TC button.

Hope this is clear.

It helps but...

(okay lemme see if I got this right )

BRC sends out SMPTE to MDR via 1/4 to SMPTE in on MDR
(now how will I sync the MDR to my ADAT ?)

adat usually use the 9 pin method --IN/OUT to IN/OUT
the back of the MDR doesnt have that 9 pin but a MIDI

(clearing my head) like Joe Pesci in Lethal Weapon
O.k., o.k. uhhhh kay, uuuh kay, uuh kay, O.k. uugh kay now...

BRC to MDR via 1/4 in SMPTE, (from there how to adat)
ADAT out into MOTU 2408 card/computer
CUBASE has ASIO/MMC so it should catch when I hit play on the BRC? (is that about right) these credit cards are burning a hole in my pocket, but I gotta make sure or wait for (gulp)

THE HD 24

Well, like I said, I'm less than novice concerning the BRC. My best guess it that you'd hook it up to ADAT just as you normally would and then send the SMPTE out to the MDR, of course placing whatever SMPTE settings that need be on the BRC and MDR (of which include just making sure its set to SMPTE and hitting the TC chase button)

I could be wrong about the BRC entirely so correct me, someone, please if I am wrong.

I have a BRC which I used with my adat farm (until I unloaded the ADATs). Anyway, the BRC provides 48K wordclock if you want it, it reads/writes smpte via 1/4" jacks, also Midi timecode AND song position pointer.

The midi out on the BRC will not transmit track arming/disarming, but it will send stop, RW, FF, Play and MTC/SPP just fine, so you can use it as the master controller, and have everything sync to it or vice versa.

To an earlier comment regarding the "entry" Mackie and the HD24 being the same price - there is one advantage that I can see of the Alesis unit over the new mackie - the Alesis has THREE adat ins and outs, which is good for those of us who have digital consoles. Of course to balance this, the Mackie has nicer pre-amps than the Alesis unit.

I'm still using my Akai DR8 + DR16 recorders as I'm familiar with them, and don't need the 96K capability - none of my consoles support it anyway, so I'd have to upgrade EVERYTHING, and I'm too poor to consider it at this point.

Hope my BRC comments help you out.

got the MDR24/96

I have been baptized (coming up out of the water)

I hooked it up to the BRC and vwala

(it wasnt that easy, you have to hit the small tiney button on the MDR called T.C Chase------no one mentioned that, but I got it)

it works great, syncs well with my one adat, (it's off like 14 sec) but I can deal, now I would like to see if the Remote 24 can control both MDR & Adat (seems impossible cause there remote does not have a 9 pin sync cable just a telephone type cable connection)

I'm selling (2) LX20, great condition, smoke free, low hours
$1300 contact my email address located at the top left

hey... I mentioned the TC button twice, see my last two posts...

Yes you did my bruva

Automaton ---

Yep, you sure did mention it, but in a CRACK FIEND state I didnt remember when I got the unit, after all I didnt print it out either.

Just looking at the lights, listening to 24 tracks play back on my board, and mixing the (2) demos they had I was like Maaaaaan
you know how you get so OVERWHELMED and GIDDY, you basically get STUPID, and you want it to work as soon as you get it . I was so overwhelmed that after a whole day of neglecting my wife, (not my son) not eating, washing, no deoderant, or brushed teeth I realized It didnt come with the M90 drive --- so I gotta get that today.

I was like damn $2000 and no drive ---THEY GET'CHA DONT THEY
the HD24 at least came with (1) though it shows 2 trays

Maaaannnn now I'm planning on getting the HR824 just so the MDR wont be alone

I'm an Alesis convert.

I was going to get the Mackie...until I did a bit more digging...

What about the fact that the MDR only supports hard drives 32 GB or less? I also heard that it records in 15 minute chunks so...if you are going to be FTPing the files to edit on your PC you will be pasting a lot of small files together. Not to mention you have to buy the adapters for the I\O cards @ $65 each (total $390).

Am I missing anything?
