I posted a thread on upgrading to the digi 002 but 1 other option i was considering was using an Alesis hd24 to do my recording than transferring the files to my pc for editing. my question any suggestions on what type of mixer I should purchase? basically my setup would be band into mixer into alesis. It's my understanding that this is how this works. opinions please

Hi gtr_guy26... welcome to hr.com. I use the Soundcraft Ghost with my Alesis ADAT HD24's. Also... checkout our hr.com Alesis forum to see what some of our other hr.com memebers are using. Here's a quick link... http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/forumdisplay.php?daysprune=15&f=19

i own a 002r and i am in the process of getting an hd24xr and mixer so i can record with the hd24xr than dump to pro tools le for mixing also.

depending on budet, djl's sugestion of a soundcraft ghost is a good one. you can find them used on ebay.

i just bought a soundtracs topaz project 8 on ebay for 1,000 shipped.
you could look for one of those or a mackie 8-buss or an old tascam or ramsa board.

also you can have your hd24 hot-rodded to sound great for $750.00 by jim williams at audio upgrades.

i have heard many good things about his hd24 mod and i plan on doing it myself.

The setup that DJL mentioned is a good solid setup. I think the Soundcraft Ghost is probably the best under $5k board on the market when you factor in quality, features, durability, and price.

Concerning the Jim Williams upgrades to the Alesis HD24. I actually talked with him for a while one day and he reccomended that I just get the XR version of the HD24 and not bother with the upgrade. He said that his upgrade seems to end up sounding strikingly similar to the XR upgraded HD24's.

thanks for the input guys I'll look into getting a Soundcraft ghost. does anyone know if i'd be able to get one for under 2grand with 24 channels obviously i'm looking at getting a used one.

i dont think you can touch a ghost used for 2k. i think they are in the 3.5k range.
check ebay often.

Yes you can find a 24 channel used ghost for 2k. I would barely pay 3.5k for a full sized ghost with the auto control and meter bridge.

well in that case ill have to get one! i hear they sound real nice.

Soundcraft Ghost and HD24 balanced in/outs?

Does anyone here use a Soundcraft Ghost mixer with the Alesis HD24? I wonder about the "balanced' analog ins/outs on the Alesis being compatible with what I understand to be a "quasi-balanced" Soundcraft Ghost. By that I mean the Ghost has a slightly different balanced signal than what some call "true balanced". Any one have that issue when using an HD24 and a Ghost or is that not a problem? Thanks

Hd24 is a good unit. Personally i use a Mackie 24x8x2 console and you can get plenty of those for way less than 2k if you do your research...not to mention it's a great live board.with 24 direct outs and 24 tabe B returns makes it cool if you wish to mix outside the pc analog style after editing on a pc or mac. With a presonus firesudio lightpipe bridge i can record in the HD24 and simultaniously be recording into Sonar 8.5 producer.Just use the ADAT optical outs into the lightpipe interface into the computer via firewire. This is cool; 2 sets of saved sessions. An awesome feature just in case your computer drive fails and crashes. It saved my rearend on an album i was working on.Luckily i remembered most of the plugin settings and edits i did. The Hd24 does not recall last mix. so edit in computer unless you wish to write every setting on a logbook for each song to refer to. i can also vouch for the fact the mackie produces great vocals even with out say an Avolon737 mic pre.
