I've heard lot's to bad things about these but I wouold like to know why they are so bad? (ex. the wall wart). ALso, is a good, low cost compressor that I can use for studio stuff. I hear good things about DBX? somthing <200.

thanks!

Why is the 3630 so bad? I dunno. Because it's a poorly designed cheaply made piece of crap? I can tell you why I personally dislike the unit, and that is because I was unable to get a usable signal with it.

Most inexpensive compressors have some degree of undesirable artifact (footyprints) which they leave on your signal. With some it's an acceptable compromise for a low-budget home-reccer. But it's one you don't have to make anymore. The RNC, Real Nice Compressor made by FMR Audio is the best compressor available for under $1,000.00. You may purchase it from mercenary.com for $170, I believe. Or go to fmraudio.com and check for a dealer near you. Hint: they aren't carried by the Guitar Marts!

Don't forget to thank me in your Grammy speech! You're welcome.

I too have gone through the Alesis thing, it didn't hurt me tho because i got it for free, and now I am convinced that the RNC is a great compressor! They're only 154 at Full Compass.

thanks for the info knownuttin. I would still liek to know what you mean by "footyprints"

The RNC looks great. and what about DBX? how are they?

one last question to piss everyone off....how about Behringer? their tube stuff?

thanks

just go with the RNC......

when he says "footyprints", he means that you can HEAR the compressor working..... you don't want that for the most part, especially with cheap compressors that leave BAD sounding artifacts.....

the RNC, on the other hand, has very, VERY manageable "footyprints".

A great man once said that writing about music is like dancing about architecture. But here goes.

Footyprints are the way cheap compressors squash the amplitude peaks in a clumsy obvious way, like the Dad chaperoning the teen house party turning down the stereo just when everybody's getting their groove on. Most of us don't want that, so we look for something to control dynamic range without messing with a sound we already like. The RNC delivers this affordably.

dbx makes many fine compressors. The 266XL Project One is NOT one of them.

Several people on this board recommend at least one of the Behringer comps. Perhaps they'll chime in.

I don't care much for the 266 either... but I can vouch for the DBX 166XL though.... it's not an RNC but it works quite well with very few artifacts... quite decent on bass too.........

Sorry you've had such bad luck. Life can be cruel sometimes. Why don't you just shoot them over to me? I'll pay the postage (COD). :)

Tyler,
At some point it will occur to you why people keep giving these to you.

It's not often that I have a piece of gear and think "This thing rocks. Who can I give it to?"

That was comedian Martin Mull.
