hi, im currently getting into compressing my kik and snare when tracking using a behringer composer pro. would i find much improvement in using an alesis 3060 over a behringer composer pro in recording kick and snare,as there is one going cheap of course if there's no improvment in quality i'd rather save my money for a really good compressor one day.what should i do.

I think you mean 3630... and it is a piece of junk...

There are far better units for your compressor dollar than that one...

Look at the FMR Audio RNC....

Caution: Alesis 3630 rant!!!

Lets see.....3630... $99.00

RNC....$180.00...

3630 is worth.....$49.95

RNC is worth.....$1000.00, even thought its rated as the best under $2000.00

The RNC has no gating....but the gate on the 3630 may or may not work depending on which unit, they are all different.

IMO, speaking as an experienced 3630 user...the RNC is really the only viable option. Why?

My 3630, has some problems....sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The amount of effort you can go through to get it to work is not worth it. Do you know whats its like to track some bass only to hear clicks... and pops from the compressor? Were talking its on bypass and its still screwing up the track.
I have spent hours yelling at it, just to give up..turn it off, then the next morning, with no changes to settings on anything..mixer, same sig chain... and now its decided to work...#@^^*$**#&#&#^@*#(@(#(#*$&&#*&#*&$&$....!!!!!!
Save your dollars and get the RNC, save yourself the frustration and aggrevation..If you can't afford it now..keep saving. Its far better to have no compression, than bad compression!!!!

Peace

Also,

The Composer Pro is a decent compressor for the price. The 3630 is a crappy compressor for half the price. IMHO, the 3630 would be a step DOWN from the Composer Pro.

Also, as mentioned, the RNC is a great compressor for ten times the price. Stick with the Composer Pro until you can afford a $175 RNC.

Yeah, I'll second that emotion. I had a 3630 for TWO full years and could NEVER get a decent compression sound out of it! For TWO years I thought I just wasn't understanding the fundamentals of compression, and it drove me crazy--almost made me quit the recording hobby. But I finally sold it and got another cheap (dbx) compressor and WHOA. What a difference! My vocals and bass were so much better in the first 2 minutes fiddling with the dbx than 2 years with the 3630.

No wonder Alesis went out of business...

You wanna buy my 3630 for $25.00 and a 5th of Absolut Vodka!!??
I'll ship for free! Original carton, warranty and packaging materials!

I'm serious!!

Buttttttttttttttt..................

............there are 3 useful purposes for the 3630;

1-Controlling that annoying *hiss* found in almost all Roland/Boss drum machines by incorporating the 3630's gates

2- It makes a great *efx-box* for bass when overcompressing and limiting greater than 2.1 to unity .+1 at the slowest speed/ratio and highest threshold.

3-Comes in handy as a great book-end or doorstop in any household!

It'll only cost you $100 for me to take it off your hands!

 :D :D

Possibly the most useless piece of gear ever marketed! I sold mine for $75 about four years ago, and I still have trouble sleeping at night! :D

I just sold mine on Ebay for $70, after spending $100 on it new. That was the best $70 I ever made in my entire life.

Jesus! It's not even a good doorstop!!!!
:D

Maybe a paperweight then -- it'll light up a desk in a hurry with all the flashing lights!

:D :D

Apart from their recorders it seems like everything Alesis does is fairly crappy. I have never been impressed with their mixers, effects or keyboards.

It's an ok unit for live reinforcement when the quality isn't so important such as just speaking. I use 2 of them at my church in one of the kid's rooms and it does it's job of keeping the sound under earbleeding. That's about it. A guy at GC tried to sway me to the 3630. I bought a Behringer Multicom for 5 dollars more. Great decision. 4 comps that SOUND GOOD for 5 bucks more than they wanted for the pandora's box that passes for only 2.

The Multicom is harder to controll the attack and release though. You have to mess with the gain structure because it doesn't have the knobs for them. The thresh is what determines the times.

BTW the 3630 is too light for a doorstop and the corners of it would scratch your bookshelf.
