Thanks guys...keep'em coming...but just to clarify...I am not looking for your picks for best performance on an acoustic, but rather for the best quality of recording.

I am trying to gather a collection of songs I can use as references for when I record some stuff.

Pink Floyd - 'Wish You Were Here' lead is pretty sweet sounding.

Johnny Cash - American session stuff has some really nice acoustic.

Anything recorded by T Bone Burnett. He has a very raw sound that works well. He produced the Oh Brother soundtrack. That's a great reference for bluegrass.
 
Pete Yorn - "Musicforthemornignafter"

R. Walt Vincent does a great job with acoustic guitars and getting a timeless sounding feel...I think. The whole album was basically done in a garage, amazing sounding though.
 
Don't laugh, but I think I rather like the accoustic guitar sound on early Lenny Kravitz records -- Let Love Rule and Mama Said.

Here are a couple of obscure ones, but they have fantastic acoustic:

  • Ottmar Liebert - Nouveau Flamenco 1990-2000
  • (flamenco)
    [*]Shahin & Sepehr - East/West Highway     (world music with heavy Persian influence)
    [*]Adrian Legg - Mrs. Crowe's Blue Waltz     (impossibly complex acoustic)

And before any of you think I'm getting all artsty-fartsy on ya, I don't have much of a collection of this kind of thing. These are just a few obscure but incredibly-recorded discs I've picked up over the past decade or so, usually with the thought, "hey, this'd be a great disc to put on when I have a chick come over." They are.
 
Hate the band, love the sound of the poppy and ultra bright acoustics (i havn't listened to their newest CD(s), but the old one(s) have awesome acoustics. ha.:

I have to go with Tex on Pink Floyd but I also really like Clapton's unplugged album.

Beck's acoustics on the "Sea Change" record are great, I also think the acoustic work on his "Mutations" album is incredible too.

...and I whole-heartedly agree with EleKtriKaz! PY's musicforthemorningafter is full of clean, solid acoustics
 
Tony Rice "Native American." In fact just about anything TR has done. Manzanita is a bit harsh in the CD format. At least the one I have is.

Peter Rowan's "Dust Bowl Children" and PR and Jerry Douglas' "Yonder." Yonder was recorded direct to digital in living rooms of friends and other musicians with vintage mics.

Not for the album but the acoustic guitar on "Everybody's got a story" by Amanda Marshal is well recorded . That's one of my reference CD for songs with acoustic guitar.

I'm not a fan ..But The Who have some nice acoustic guitars on there albums..
