on the verge of buying the AKG perception 200 & based on the reviews i've seen online, it comes pretty well recommended.
my main purpose is to use this mic to record vocals & acoustic guitar, probably going through a presonus tubePre to m-audio audiophile 2496.

i'd appreciate any comments from anybody who has used this mic.

the AGK is really the size of my budget but if push comes to kick ass then i may be able to up a few bucks for the Audio Technica AT4040 if there's a reasonable difference in quality..

thanks in advance..

I use the AKG Perception for my home studio. I use it to record acoustic guitar and vocals, and I have absolutely no complaints. I think it has a great top end, and is cleaner sounding than the AT 2020. (I've never used the 4040.) All in all i'm very happy with the mic, and I just saw an ad in a Guitar Center mailer that said they're selling them for like $150! MSRP was like $400, and I thought I got a good deal at $200. Oh well, it's murphy's law. Hope this helps.

thanks for the input, do you have any recordings i could hear?

I own the Perception 200. I love it. Awesome microphone and very affordable. Here's a mix I'm working on for a band. I used this mic as a middle overhead to capture the snare, I used it on the guitar with it switched to the bass rolloff setting and the pad on, and used it for vocals.

Highly reccomend this microphone.

nice track, thanks for posting.. do you have any more vocals recorded using the perception?

Mic sounds very smooth, not too hyped on-top I like it. I think it sounds best on the guitar out of everything.

wow, that mix sounds great. when you say middle overhead what exactly does that mean? would that mean one overhead or 3? the drums, the guitars, the vocals.. they all mesh together perfectly.

I'll tell you how I set up everything for that recording.

2 MXL 991's left and right overhead. AKG Perception 200 over the middle of the kit but down pretty low to pick up snare and toms(it ended up picking up more cymbals then it usually does when I use this technique, either I didn't have it low enough or he had really loud hi hats which I think was the case.) I used a Beta52 on the kick drum. Mixed in triggered toms.

Guitar I used the AKG Perception 200 on the front with bass rolloff so I used it to catch all the high end coming out of the speaker and I stuck an SM57 in the back of the amp which picked up the low resonance.

Bass went directly in. Rhodes piano went directly in. Vocals used the Perception 200.

Thanks for the compliments on the mix. I'm still working on getting it exactly how I want it but it's getting there.

Damn, I feel like a schmuck. I've been eye-balling the perception for the last week, and I think I posted like 2 threads asking about it. And then for some reason I was FINALLY like "Hey, I should search the mic!" Well, anyway, thanks for posting the song, I know it will work perfect for my studio now. I am getting two for OHs and I will use them for vocals as well.

In the recording you only miced the kick and then had 3 OHs?

This thread was helpful. I definitely want the Perception now.
