I'm deciding between the AKG C430 and Behringer B5 (I am going to buy them as pairs). Since I have *no* small-diaphragm condenser mics and want to use overheads for my drumkit, I need to get some!
But, I want something versatile. If it just works as an overhead, bleh.

Not a big price difference:
The C430 is 200$
The B5 is 160$

The C430 is really small, and AKG says it was designed for the drumkit, and it's small. And it won't get in the way as easily, cuz it's small. And it's a bit green. In a small way. It would seem to catch the lows better (100Hz).

And the B5, according to these boards, seems to be a favorite. And it's silver and a bit bigger. And it's got the omni and cardoid capsules. The frequency response cuts out some bass (cardoid). I could cut out more with the bass cut. It has a -10db pad.

As I mentioned a couple lines back, I don't want something *only* for the drumkit. I can't decide.

Has anyone had experience with the two of these?
Who can advise?

No. The B5 is an unknown entity around here.
The Oktava MK012's are a favorite around here. If you can get them for $50 apiece it's almost a no-brainer. They work well on accoustic plectrum instruments also. Some feel there may be quality control issues with them.
They also have additional capsules available other then the standard cardioid they come with, but hard to find these at a comparable cheap price.

crazydoc,

Where can one get the MK012 for 50$?
Everywhere I've seen online (jrrshop, 8thstreet, musiciansfriend, zounds, americanmusical, etc) sells them for 100$. Same price as the MK-319.

Guitar Center has them on sale periodically - and sometimes you can get them at that price when not on sale. Depends on the individual store manager. There's no place online that sells them except the Soundroom, that I know of. And they are a lot more expensive there, though QC is supposed to excellent.

They both work fine. If the B5's had been available when I bought my C430's then that is what I would have got.

The B5's are a lot more flexible (-10db, high pass and 2 capsules)

Tony

P.S. I have 2 of each.

Overheads -- get two Behringer ECM8000s and just leave them up there. 80 bucks. Then get yourself a decent SD mic for other stuff. The 8000s will also work as a second mic on acoustic guitar at times. Good for shakers and tamborines too. You need a good quiet amp though for these. They're omnis...if you have a bad sounding room...ignore this opinion.
