I just purchased a AKG C 2000 B mic ... I havent gotten a chance to actually set it up..Im planning to just use it to record vocals for my demo since i am a Singer/song-writer...but i wanted opinions on it to make sure it was a good choice for my needs.

well its a bit late now to be asking opinions, use it and see for yourself! you never know, could be the best mic for you, if not, you can always return it.

I personally think you have done well. The C2000B is a very versatile little sucker at its price point. It is a small diaphragm mic in a larger housing than most small diaphragms. There is very little that it totally sucks on, a bunch of stuff that it is good for, and a few things that it is truly excellent for. Vocals is one of the things it is often good on. Not great, but good. It is also a fair mic for acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, or any other stringed instrument. It often shines on female vocals, and it absolutely rocks on toms, conga, djembe, doumbek, or almost any other drum that is smaller than a kick drum. It is a good overhead, and a *really* good mic on guitar cabs. For under $200, what's not to love? If you only get one condenser, and you only have a couple hundred bucks to spend, you could do a lot worse. Be happy and go sing into it. If it doesn't work on your voice, try it on any of the above, and you'll find it will earn its keep.

I just scored one of these for 100 bucks on craigslist. Can't wait to try it. I did a search for it to see if anyone else has one and what kind of results they got.

I figured for a 100 bucks I why not. I did some searching for it and most places have it for around $300. There is all kinds of stuff I can find to do with it from what I've been reading.

I have one...but I wouldnt cut my vocals with it...your voice might be a match...it helps if you are a girl...it should do a fine job on that acoustic.

Actually, I paid $99 and $85 for my two, so yeah, you win, Darrin. The C2000B is a small diaphragm electret condenser. It is an extremely versatile mic with a lot of applications. It sounds to my ears a lot like an Oktava MC012, but not nearly as prone to popping when used as a vocal mic. It works very well for some vocalists, not so well for others, like many mics with "character". It rocks on cabs, toms, conga, djembe, as a drum overhead, and on most acoustic instruments. It is good on acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, Dulcimer (mountain or hammered), violin/viola/cello, or piano. I don't like it as much on brass/sax. In short, it is a multipurpose instrument mic that is very good on cabs and percussion, and is a pretty good vocal mic for some vocalists, especially females and high tenors. It's probably not what I would put in front of Johnny Cash, but I would put it in front of Taylor Swift, or someone like Michael Jackson or Freddy Mercury (were they alive-mic'ing them now doesn't do much). It would be a better vocal mic for Paul McCartney than Harry Chapin.
I've often said- it's not the first mic I put up for anything. It's the second mic I put up for everything. One of the most versatile cheap condensers on the planet. No one is going to say it's a Neumann U87 or whatever, but I haven't met anyone who has used it that actually hates it. For a cheap condenser, that is saying a lot.-Richie

They couldnt put a condenser in front of Micheal Jackson because of all the foot noise he made...hense the SM7...but any tenor could use it.

That's why God made duct tape. Just use it around the ankles.-Richie

I use to have a C 3000 B that seemed to work very well for me and a few other guys I recorded. I guess the C 2000 B could sound a lot different from the C 3000 B, but I can't see it being too different. Once I try it I'll know for sure. :)

It's a whole different ball game, Phil. The C3000B is a large diaphragm mic, and in its price range, I think there are a lot of mics out there I'd rather own. The only thing unique about it is that all of Roland's COSM modeling effects are based on a C3000B. The C2000B, IMHO, is the better mic, and the more versatile one. The only thing I'd say is start looking for another one, because they make a great stereo and drum overhead pair.-Richie

I try it as soon as I get a chance to. I'll keep my eyes open for another one to see if I can score another bargain.
