A little info needed:

Do you like the AKG4000 B as a vocal mic?

Is the AKG a "tube" mic that colors input?

Just returned an AT tube mic because it colored vocal input.

Thanks for anyone who uses this mic for the info.

The C4000B is a solid state FET mic. As far as how it sounds, beats me. I've never gotten to audition one. I like the C2000B a lot, generally hate the C3000B, and have been dying to check out a 4000 for months.-Richie

Happy holidays Ritchie & Green Hornet,

The AKG C 4000B is one of my "go to" LD condensers for many applications. It has a very unique tone and it is a bit warmer than the C414B-ULS. I've liked this particular AKG model mic a lot ever since its debut back in 1999. I cannot recommend this one highly enough for just about anybody's needs. :) FWIW, I also like the C2000B. However, their C 4000B is a much better microphone all the way around IMO.

Yo Strat & Rich:

Thanks a bunch for the information. I've been using the AKG 3000 for vocals running it through a Grace 101 -- comes out pretty good but I'm anxious to get my hands on the 4k B.

Appreciate your information.

Happy New Year

I have a C4000B and have found it a great mic. It has a good stong presense to it without sounding harsh, a somewhat transparnt mic compared to other I have. I always use the 4000B when I have to mic something omni-directional.

Although this is not my first choice for vocals, I would miss it, if it where not in my collection.

AKG C 4000B

Hi guys,

The C 4000B has to be one of the finest sounding condensers in its class...I absolutely love its sound in hypercardioid & omnidirectional. The cardioid pattern is really nice as well. I use this mic on acoustic guitar also & it sounds incredibly detailed.:)

Yo Strat:

Question.

Of the three choices or settings on the AKG 4000 B, which one is best for UP FRONT vocals.

Of course, I'll find out when I get one. Just wanted the input from someone who has used this mic. On my 3000, I have the three little switches all on the left side, which I'm told is the OFF side. [zero Db side]

Little switches that work with the end of a ball point pen have always confused me.

Thanks,
Green Hornet:cool: :D

PS In any of your opinons, what would be a step UP from the AKG 4000? [I'm a curious Hornet]

Step up from C4000B- Little steps- Shure KSM44, AKG C414 TLII. Bigger steps- Soundelux ifet7, NeumannU87.-Richie

Hi Green Hornet,

Just so you know the switches found on the C 4000B are easily adjusted with your fingers...No ball point pen required whatsoever. Step up from the C 4000B? Hmmm, I think this particular mic is in a class of its own quite honestly. I tried a C414B-ULS on my Martin but the C 4000B sounded BETTER on this particular instrument.

Ritchie, did you mention that you use the C414/TLII as your main C414 microphone for recording acoustic guitar (or do you use the standard C414B-ULS instead)? I happen to prefer the TLII myself because it sounds better on bass guitar cabinet mic'ing & a host of other applications like vocals and room mic'ing etc. That said, I still think that the AKG C414 is a REALLY versatile microphone & I will end up with one pretty soon.

Concerning the KSM44 I think that is a nice microphone too. However, I prefer the sound of the KSM32 for my purposes. There is something about the KSM32 that does it for me (the other polar patterns not being an issue here).

Actually, Strat, I use the C414B-ULS as a guitar mic, and for a bunch of other stuff. I woult select TLII if I was going to use it as a vocal mic also.-Richie
