Average street price is dropping to $2999. AKAI is aggressive with software updates and customer service. What's going on? Yikes!

dps24 bargain?

Seems like you get a lot for under $3k. I don't see any reviews in publications...is anyone here using this machine?

yeah but...

A couple of those reviews are by the same guy, one is a press release, and one is by a company selling equipment. I've checked out the ezboard dps site and these folks are truly satisfied. However I suspect that the folks at vsplanet are happy and so are the folks at the korg board etc.

In the end I guess there is a lot to like about all of these machines (the technology is amazing). I have not come across one comment from someone who is sorry they purchased the dps24 or who has gone from the dps24 to another platform.

If there are any disgruntled dps24 owners / former owners out there please share your thoughts.

Thanks,

Bob

Hey Lee!

Have you ever walked across that skywalk (in your avatar)? Is it scary? Some action/adventure movie recently used it as a setting for a big fight scene, but I forget which one...

No, I haven't been to the building yet! it's about 200 miles away from me..... besides, I think you gotta pay to go up there...

yah, I know the movie "Entrapment" was shoot there....

Yes I am planning on buying an Akai DPS24 recorder as well. Where's the best buy? zzounds? Guess I'll take a wonder through the internet.

Don't forget ebay; I picked up a DPS16 there.

8th Street and Musician's Friend will e-mail you a price on the DPS24. The best price I've seen from a traditional vendor is MF; 8th Street reluctantly offered to match it by phone. A good unit - specific reference is at the DPSworld BBS, found at http://pub52.ezboard.com/fdpsworldfrm3 . They've got an AKAI software developer that checks in every week or so there and answers questions. Another good information source is a DPS mailing list; it's at http://groups.yahoo.com .

DPS24

I've been looking on zzounds, 8th street and E-bay for pricing on the DPS24.
So far E-bay has had the best prices by a couple of hundred. Not sure if I would be comfortable buying through E-bay or not for somthing this expensive. Of course I reside in Canada, so $3000 US dollars is in reality, $6000 of our dollars...sucks, our dollar I mean. I have some calls in to some canadian dealers to see it wwould run me purchasing it here in Canada.

Well, buy it down here, have it shipped to Tom's, and pick it up at the jamfest...:D

lol Sure Sure Treeline I may be able to get it cheaper buying the unit here in Canada right now since the conversion rate is so bad. I may even wait another six months for the price to fall as we all know it will ! I mean the DPS16's have really come down, I''m not ruling out purchasing one of those either.

What are you using Treeline?

no one is reviewing it and the price is coming down for the same reason......no1 is buying that unit.
not that its a bad unit it looks like a beast. its just not selling. they'll have to drop prices to contend with yamaha and roland. i mean the prices are close now but both yamaha and roland users swear buy them so it'll be hard to get the candy from those baby's

I recently picked up a DPS 16, but my older stuff (icon below) was recorded on a mixer / soundblaster card.

The DPS24 is now less expensive than the Roland. Roland has an advantage with monitor connectivity, I believe. The DPS24 is reputed to have an extremely stable O/S, which has been a problem with some Roland units. Yamahas have had problems with self destructing hard drives. Everyone has an issue these days...:D

Treeline, did you buy your DPS16 new? Because as you probably know many stores like music123 and zzounds don't carry it anymore, discontinued??
If I do buy a DPS16 I want a new one.

Picked it up on ebay, slightly used.

Some ebay vendors are selling "new in box" units, where I believe you can fill in the original warranty card. AKAI is pretty good about that stuff, so I'm told. I never had any experience or need, though.

Ebay price was $800 - $1000 last time I looked. I ended up grabbing a "buy it now" package with a couple of snakes and a case, so I paid a small premium. Watch for the upgraded units - 20 - 40G hard drives. They'll have updated software as well. The burners are packages that might have a used casing and a new set of innards, available from a consistent ebay vendor who pops up a new listing any time there's a DPS16 for sale so you find it in a search. Good stuff for the price.

The only thing I don't like so far is that the fan has a little whine - about the same or a bit quieter than my computer. It seems that mic positioning can overcome it.

Sounds like you got a good deal on E-bay. I've been watching E-bay as well and from time to time there are some new units, and by he starting price of some of them, probaby HOT. Did I hot? I mean't to say misappropriately priced...yeah that's it! But anyway I have a few calls to a few local music stores in my city, the one that called me back is trying to sell me somthing else of course...I swear that sometimes "I can smell the whisky burning up on copper head road" if you know what I mean in my hick city.

As for the whining sound, maybe ask around or inquire at Akai if there's a filter that can be installed or some way to dampen it?

Well, if I want to get into it, there's a method to install a fan with a different blade pitch, wrap it in rubber and so forth. It's easier to back away from the thing. It's still quieter than my computer.

The prices are pretty stable. When this unit was getting closed out, retailers were letting them go for about $1100. I actually paid a slightly long price, but I was through with fooling around, saw it, and snapped it up. The only price that matters with an e-bay auction is what you see in the last 30 seconds, unless you set a high "drop dead" bid amount or use "buy it now."

Example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15199&item=936757184

The price will probably climb to about a thousand bucks (with two days left), unless someone gets lucky or jumps the gun with a bid. The reserve seems low. This one has a 30G drive - the right setup.

Yes I saw that one on E-bay, there's always one for sale on there. I have to admit the DPS16 is a VERY nice unit. I agree the prices seem stable.
