Akai doesn't advertise it,...but i've "heard" that the DPS16 is CAPABLE of 24-bit recording across ALL 16 tracks. at the price that these can be found for these days,..this seems pretty incredible. can any DPS16 users VERIFY this?? 16 tracks at
24bit/44.1kHz as well as 16 PHYSICAL faders and pan knobs, 56-bit internal dsp,....man.......where have i been??:) :)

p.s. IF anyone can verify this,...does the 24bit/44.1kHz resolution "hamper" any functionality of the DPS (other than the obvious 24bit/16bit CD issues)??

Yo Crate of Ingenuity:

I use the Yam 2816. OK. It does 24 bit; however, I cannot burn a CD @ 24 bit configuration. I can, however, run the sound out the RCA jacks into tape and the result is pretty good; however, not quite as good as doing the normal CDR or CDRW.

I think I run 24 bit on my gear @44. But, I'm sure I cannot do 24 bit @48. The box tells me on the screen--"no will work."

I'm not really familiar with the Akai but I would bet it works about the same way as the 2816/4416.

I've co-owned the Akai DPS-16 for a little while and can indeed record at least 14 tracks at 24-bit & 44.1K!!
I've yet to go beyond 14 tracks. As was stated with the Yamaha, you cannot burn a CD at 24 bits you will need to "dither-down" to the standard 16 bits. But, like the Yamaha. you can play down all the tracks in realtime and hear them through the master and monitor outputs.

My buddy who I bought it with and I have yet to get to the finished mix stage! It is a truly incredible piece of equpment for the price!
If you are interested, we bought ours through the internet at:

I hope this helps you.

hey Cratinus,

OK..in the MANUAL it says you can only record 6 tracks at 24 bit-96khz, OR 10 tracks at 24 bit-48khz or less...

BUT.. it depends on the drive

on MINE which came with a maxtor 20 gig drive i can record 8 tracks at 24 bit-96, OR ALL 16 at 24 bit-48khz or less..

I'm sure if you got a NEW one you'd get at least these specs

hope this helps,
T

i also forgot!!

at 24 bit-96khz you can only use two effects per project on an EB4M effects card.

at 24 bit-48khz or less you can use all 4

these are the only drawbacks i know of, or have effected me

thanks for the replies. that is really good news!! 16 tracks of playback at 24-bit!! very cool. i DO understand the "dithering" inevitability...BUT i own an Alesis Masterlink so at least i can fire a 24-bit SIXTEEN TRACK mix into it before i "dither". very, very good!

p.s. i LOVE the fact that there are FOUR aux sends on the DPS16. BUT,..how are the internal effects? aside from the usual reverb and chorus are there any "unusual" or "specialty" effects to be found?

p.s.s. LAST QUESTION: i understand the EQ is 3-band with parametric mid. i've seen the "Q-link" knob configuration for the eq. where is the knob/controller for the "mid frequency Q"?? is it difficult to adjust?? cheers.

um....
i'm not sure how you'd hook up a 16 channel mix since there are only 8 inputs..

the internal effects are good for standard reverbs but there isnt much that is special.. but they are editable etc

and there are 6 q-link knobs...

1-high freq
1-high level
1-mid freq
1-mid level
1-low freq
1-low level

very easy! almost like an analog board but you have to tell it which channel you're working on

good day,
T

sorry, ad. when i mentioned the "16-track mix" thing i meant i'd SEND the mix FROM the dps16 TO the Masterlink.
also, i understand the basic eq layout on the Q-link knobs. i know that the mid eq has a "sweepable" bandwidth as well,...i just wasn't sure how to adjust that (whether with the jog wheel or by using the cursor buttons).:)
