alrighty....

i got a nady srm14 mixer..
delta 66 with omni box
audio technica 4033sm
event 20 20 monitors
and a computer....

now....
i hook the mic into the mixer.......
now this is the part im not sure....
do i hook the monitors outs or the record (mix outs) into the mixer....
and connect the monitors to the stereo outs of the mixer???????

and if so......i have to take the effects off the channnel thats coming in through the sound card right...so that i wont be hearing the eq effects on the beat/instrumentation when its being played with the vocals im recording right????

just wondering if im doign this right and if im in the right ballpark of hooking this stuff up the right way...

this is the first time ive ever played with a mixer...and i dont wanna do it wrong u know :-)

help a fellow home recordist in need

thanks alot
joe

Sounds to me like you'd want to connect your monitors to the
"main out", "control room out" or "master out." I don't know what Nady names their outputs but if you have a Control Room option, use that first.

The Mix outputs are to connect a DAT deck or other "recording" device - just like the Omni's mix outs.

I didn't really understand the last question.

OK my friend, here's what you do. If your mic is plugged into channel one of the mixer, locate the channel one INSERT. This is where you want to grab just the mic signal to send to your recorder. Use a 1/4" mono cable on one end and on the other, whatever fits the input to your recording device. The outputs of your recording device (I'm assumming it's a sound card from a computer) can go to the inputs of one of the stereo mixer channels on the board. This in where you can adjust playback volume of what's coming back out of the computer. The main outputs or controll room outputs or whatever they're labled should feed your Events. With a set up like this you're getting the least amount of circuitry in the signal path and the best path to tape out of your gear and you won't have to worry about setting yourself up with a feedback situation. When you're tracking, you can turn off the Events and monitor with headphones from the headphone jack on the mixer. That's what I'd do for sure.

That trackrat is sho' 1 smart person, ain't he!!?:D

ok i see the control room outs those are what my monitors plug into right?

but how do i get the mic to go back into my sound card...what outs do i use for that stereo outs in the back?

and what ins do i use the auxinlariy ins on my card or the line inputs?

thanks for the help man

You're mic is headed for the computer when you patch an ADDITIONAL patch cable (ther 1/4" one I mentioned in my first answer) from the INSERT on your mixer to one of the line inputs on your sound card. You can set the input levels from the mic to the computer input with the TRIM or GAIN (it will be labaled either trim or gain) controll at the top of the mic's channel strip.
Now when you want to record a drum machine or a synth into the computer, unplug the cable that was coming from the mic channel on the mixer to the soundcard, from the soundcard (you only used one of the two line inputs on the card for this) and replace it with the drum machine or synth.

alright

so say i plug the mic into channel two of the mixer......

i take a 1/4 plug plug it into the insert 2 on the mixer......then say into line input two on the sound card????

now about getting the music onto the mixer.......

i have 4 direct outs on my sound card, monitor out, and record (mix) outs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
now i plug those into a stereo channel into the mixer?

then the control room outs on the mixer go to my amp/monitors right?

thanks agian

also one more question i could get from u before i go to radio shack...

what kind of 1/4 inch plugs would u suggest i get
1/4 inch stereo balanced
or 1/4 inch mono unbalance plugs

OK, if you have four outputs on your soundcard, you can bring them back into four unused (stereo channels or mono channels, it's up to you) channels on the mixer. Then, with whatever recording software that you're using you can assign anything you want to to any of these four outputs and have controll over their volume at the mixer. This is real handy while tracking because you can turn whatever you have patched to an individual channel up or down in a heartbeat as opposed to mousing and tweeking in the computer. When you go to do final mixdown, assign all tracks to the main left/right stereo buss and do your mixing in the computer and render that down to a stereo wave and you're done.
Sounds like you're getting your arms around what I was trying to explain.
And as far as cables go, for what I'm describing you want plain old mono, unbalanced cables as the INSERTs are unbalanced.

alright.....

on my mixer......

its says that the inserts on the back of the mixer........to use as a direct out i dont plug it all the way in.......

and if u plug it all the way thats for effects like a compressor....so i should just plug it halfway in right????????

as far as the outs go......which one of the outs will be the true sound?

the is 1-4 directs outs.... 2 monitor outs ....and 2 record mix outs... so thats 8 outs on the sound card...... but which ones will give me the true sound of whats playing as far as the music goes........And.........how do i turn of the effects to those certain channels that has the beat playing?

alright now that i have it hooked up all the way assuming that i do.........

if the eq is set on 0 thats flat.....that means im hearing what im playing on the computer with no effects at all no mid or nothing changed right...........

with the volume levels.....theres a control room volume level....master mix level then the levels of each individual track....

what are the levels supposed to be at......what is not supposed to go over what u level...... like is the music supposed to stay in the green area............the yellow area.............

cause i wanna adjust the vocals im record threw the mixer... with what im hearing already on my computer....so that when i mess with the effects on the computer i know what level to put on the vocals so i dont have to eq or nothing like that ...just add a little compression and all that.........

thanks
joe

one more problem.....

i can get the vocals to show up on the mixer....

but i cant get them to go back to my sound card adn record onto my cool edit program.....

i get em to show up green on the bars of the mixer but i cant get them back into cool edit

Hi Joe,

I use a 14 channel board to plug in all my mics and instruments. I use the mixer to mix down to stereo and send the stereo out to my sound card and use Cubase to mix and master. I do this as I only record one channel at a time anyhow. I have my monitors coming from the stereo output of my soundcard. When I record I use headphones so there isn't any feedback problems. When I mix and master the monitors are there all ready to go. This also gives me the option to use effects from the board while recording or add them later in Cubase while mixing.

Morningstar's technique is easier to setup but not as clean a signal. Since your just starting a clean signal is probably the least of your headache's right now. You might want to hook em up his way for now.

Make sure that CoolEdit has your new sound card selected as the record and playback device.
