Aiff or Wave? Which is best?

I have heard that the .aiff format is superior to .wav, but I have not found any information to support or reject that claim. Is this true?

As well, would .mp3s encoded at 256kb/s 44.1kHz be the same quality as an MP3 encoded .wav file of the same bitrate? I am archiving my collection of samples and the encoder I use (AudioActive production Studio) can export to .wav as well as .mp3. The file size is the same and they sound more or less the same, but are they?

Thanks.

Also, word up to the mainframe.
