Hm, thing didn't take my post. From before....

.....

So I'm recording my band tomorrow. We've all had the week off for about 3 months now and we're quite ready to get things going.

Two weeks ago I formatted my hard drive and cleaned it up real good and installed a fresh copy of my OS, Win 2000.

Upon installing the fresh copy of Cubase 5.1, I fired the sucker up to load up some old files and give it a test run before the big day tomorrow. The files loaded, but the performance was INCREDIBLY groggy. Not only do the monitors "pop" everytime I open a window (the mixing window for instance), but when I click on any part to drag it the computer takes about 3 seconds to respond. It's insanely slow and I don't know why!

I'm running:

AMD1700 (running at about 1.45 ghz)
1024k of DDR RAM
40gb+70gb of 7200 HD
Aardvark Q10 with the new drivers from the Aardvark site (was using them before with no problem)

Any ideas? Something I'm missing? I checked the buffers already and made sure it's getting plenty. I'm just about to lose my mind!

Thanks guys,
-Rick, Detroit

You probably are using the wrong drivers for Cubase. Boot the program and pull down the audio menu and select 'system'. Pull down the ASIO Device pop-up menu and make sure "ASIO Multimedia Driver" is selected. Click on the ASIO control panel to open up the ASIO Multimedia Setup. Make sure your audio card is selected on the presets pop-up menu. It is possible to create a custom setup for your audio card if you are experiencing problems such as dropouts and crackles. There is also online help in the ASIO Multimedia Setup dialogs. Make sure you test your new configuration if you change anything.

If that doesn't work try selecting another disk cache scheme in the Audio System setup dialog.

My final guess; you may be experiencing this problem if you didn't install a current version of Direct X.

Good Luck.

For problems with audio clicking at screen changes and updates, you may want to decrease or completely turn off the graphics acceleration on your graphics card. When you reformatted the card probably automatically sets itself to maximum acceleration which you won't need for the audio.

I run a Q-10 on a comparable system and you definately shouldn't be having such lags.

Like NY mentioned, make sure you have the dedicated driver for the Q-10 in the ASIO panel selected. Also, after a reformat, you may want to go into your "systems" setting and check to make sure that there are no conflicts with your Q-10 and any other device. Remember that after a reformat every piece of equipment in that computer is re-detected and will re-install itself, usually in the most CPU selfish manner that it can. All of your old tweeks and adjustments to make the system run smooth are probably gone.

Also, did you take the dongle out when you installed? I know in SX it totally messes up the install process if you put the dongle in before installing. I am not sure with VST but I would think it could also have an impact.

Let us know how it goes.
