Here's the story. I have almost a finished a piece that I've been working on. It's 12 tracks with one to two plug ins on each track. I hit the play button on the transport to give a listen through and after 3 or 4 seconds it stopped playing and my CPU usage shot from maybe 10-15% up past 85%! It gave me a message about taking off plug ins or increasing the CPU usage that's allowed. I've never had this problem before and have other songs with 20+ tracks with 4 to 5 plug ins on each track that still play only using 50% CPU usage.

I closed out everything... restarted the computer and opened up PT and got the same thing for this song. After restarting again I went in and was able to record a track with the CPU usage down low. I went to play it back and again the same thing!

Here's my system info:
VPRMatrix 2.4ghzP4, XP, 512 RAM.

Any help please! Thanks!
PS: I've also posted this on the Digidesign user conference but figured to post it here too as many of ya'll know ur shit about PT.

I would recommend defraging your hard drive and seeing if there are any odd processes running. you probably need to change your buffers... but I've only used PT once and hated it so I don't remember how to do it :)

What plugs are you using? Some plugs take a lot more processing power than others- reverbs and stuff like amplitube or sampletack can eat processor space fast.

Are you using busses? I've found that routing tracks to a bus and then putting a hefty plug on it can have take more than the usual amount of CPU space. Worse is routing busses through another bus.

Also, is it a random place in the song where it srews up, or the same place everytime? If the same, is there something associated with that time in the song (i.e. a particular track starts or a certain effect kicks in?)

Have you added any software recently or installed updates from Microsoft? Online while recording? Have a CD in the drive? Have antivirus software running? All just suggestions of things that might cause momentary spike in CPU usage.

Take care,
Chris

Try changing your buffer setting to higher during mix-downs.

Remember to set them lower for recording to reduce latency.

Switch to a mac.

Don't upgrade to 6.0
