i didn't really know where exactly to post this.. its more of a funny story than a mixing dilemma but i'm hoping you guys will get a kick out of it.
so yesterday i recorded a song .. no big deal.. i spent about an hour on it and it turned out ok for doing everything in 1 or 2 takes.
tonight i finally got around to going and and poor man mastering it.. as i'm not very skilled at mastering.. i just do enough to get by..
it sounds fine.. so i go to the store and pop in the cd in my car stereo and stick the volume up to the 20 mark(which is pretty loud)..
i notice my song is pretty quiet even at this level so i adjust the volume way up until my speakers are distorting and it barely sounds loud enough here..
at this point i'm freaking out wondering how i could have made such a gross volume error..
i come back and push the RMS up and re-burn it..
volume at 20 in the car again.. but its no good.. its STILL WAY too quiet.
then i go back again to look at it and i realize its pushing a constant -9 RMS.
that's when it hits me .. i've been building a studio live room all day and using a gun that is loaded with .22 calibre bullets to shoot nails into concrete(it is VERY loud). on top of that i came right home and cranked my monitors up almost full blast.
i'm sure the super loud monitoring level didn't help much.. but i didn't notice as i was already half deaf.
needless to say.. i spent 2 hours trying to figure out what was wrong with my mix when all along i didn't even realize there was nothing wrong.. it was my ears
whats funny is it was actually a big sigh of relief that came out of me when i realized i just had some hearing loss
i was thinking "oh great then i really am mixing this just fine, yay!"
let this be a lesson to us all.. don't forget the earplugs
heres to hoping my ears recover soon!
