Hello Folks,
Ido recently asked for the opportunity to rerecord the solo for this track.
http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=7302598&q=hi
Upon inserting the new guitar line into the project I discovered a problem. I'd recorded the song using the free spin audio VST wrapper - which is quite good BUT it's not universally compatible & annoyingly doesn't remember the VST or settings when the project is reloaded. I've also moved on to the cakewalk wrapper which is pretty good.
Between the two I'd lost all my settings & sequence of VSTs.
I've had to run from memory to try to recreate the original mix.
I gave up & decided to do a complete remix and rock the tune up a little more.
As a result I need feedback.
The four main changes are the new solo, a little less bass guitar, a little more of the distorted guitar and the use on the final stereo bus of glaceverb final mix reverb + Classic Limiter + a tiny cut to the mid range.
Any suggestions, recommendations or comments gratefully received.

I remember this one. That sounds like some Rami drumming. Very nice.

This mix generally sounds pretty good. If I remember correctly this new mix has better seperation than the original. The shakers are a little loud to me. Snare seems awfully crisp and is lacking some meat. That's all passable though. It's the vocal track that jumps out as the worst offender to me. It seems very dry and midrangey. It kind of sounds like it has an old radio announcer effect on it. I'd personally like to hear it more natural sounding with some smooth lows and airy highs, and have enough room effect on it that it sits in with the guitars. Just my 2 cents bud. :)

Rats...I hate posting immediately after greg...he's so thorough :).

I have heard many incarnations of this tune, and I agree that this one has better separation...really much better overall clarity to my ears...nice.

Not sure how many of the above points I would've caught had I not read his post first, but I pretty much agree with each of them - particularly the shaker and vocals. The shaker definitely brightens the whole thing up nicely, but maybe bring 'em down just a bit. I get that mid-rangey vibe from a lot of your vocal tracks, but this is better than some in that area.

I was happy to give another version of this a spin...:D

Hello gents,
A tweak or two based on your comments - always incisive & inciteful Greg. Good memory and comparison heat. thanks both of you.
The drums are RAMI and the solo Ido. Vox Terry & the mess is me.
I've:
added a little mid range peak to the stereo drum track at about the snare freq.
reduced the vol of tambourine and rice shaker.
removed the EQ cut to the top end of the vocals (revealing some sibilance)
added Glaceverb small room inside verb to the bvox and Glaceverb vocal preset 1 to the main vox.
Any improvement?

Sounds good!

The bass is not audible on the laptop, so won't comment on that.

The drums sounds pretty good. The back up vocals behind the chorus sounds pretty good.

The lyrics are pretty cool. The warm solo is pretty cool. Would be nicer a little lower in volume and with a more roomy sound to it. The the rest of the track sounds nice and roomy but the solo sounded a little too upfront.

Nice switch to rap singing towards the end. Nice close.

Thanks BB,
I'll address that when I get some feedback re the other changes & re-post with an update.

Sounds pretty well-balanced to me, Ray. Nice vocal harmonies from Terry and I really like the jingle-jangely backing. Guitar solo sounds a bit buried to me (but don't take my word for that...I'm a metal freak :D) Good song, witty lyrics as usual. Nice work!

Joe :):):):)

Joey,
Thanks - I think the solo seems a little buried because it has a lot of tonal commonality with the backing - I'll do some EQing to alter that without doing too much to Ido's excellent recording.
Anything else folks?

Hi Ray - vocals sounds super on this version IMO; clean, bright, and sitting nicely in the center. The settings are ones to remember...

I think the solo could use some reduction in the bottom/lower mids to brighten it up, making it as clear as the rest of the instruments/vocals. However, that being said, it's a Strat and there are some spots already that punch right out nicely now. I'm not sure - does Cakewalk allow for EQ envelopes?

Glad you allowed me redo - this solo sounds +++ better.

Just a note for listeners - there's no reverb at all on the solo's raw track, just a bunch of EC patented tone control for OD. I wanted to allow Ray to perform his magic in the mix...Adding reverb might have set it into it's own room which I wasn't keen on doing...

:D:cool::D:cool:
