crappy basement.
That's what I am working with. I mainly use headphones for playback. I do have a hidious array of salvaged speakers hooked up to my PC, pretty crappy sound.
I am going to buy a pair of monitors to add to my setup.
Any suggestions
Money is tight (drummer/student) but I have clearance to blow $150.
I would appreciate some advice.

Do you think you could try to dish out an extra $50 and buy a pair of Mackie mr5's? Their on sale for $99 each right now!

$150 each? I don't think you can get monitors for $150 a pair. At least I have never seen and $75 monitors that would be any better than a home stereo speaker...

Hmmm you might get some used KRK 5's for that price...idk. It's kinda tight!

I could probably wait another month and collect some more funds.

Yeah, that'd probably be your best option right now! Good monitors are especially one of the areas in which you don't want to skimp on!

I've heard a lot of people say how good the KRK 5's are, but I checked em out at GC a couple weeks ago and they sounded pretty damn bad to me. I was comparing them with the Tanoy Reveal's, which sounded a lot better. I dunno, the KRK's sounded muddy and just bad overall. It's just the 5's though, the 8's are pretty decent.

Haha well they're just one of those things people either love or hate ;)

Where was the GC? Some GC monitor test areas are out on the selling floor in the middle of everything while say like the GC in Boston has it's own little room set up very nicely.

Manhattan. They have a separate room for monitors, monitor stands, and a few mics. The positioning wasn't ideal, but then again the Tanoy's had the same disadvantage. The Tanoy's sounded a lot better to me. I checked out a lot of different songs on them too. I'm not gonna discredit the KRK's after one listen, but it really was a let down.

Being a newb I have to ask. When i search the e-web for active studio monitors, I get results for ranging in price from $100 to $10000 for a pair. Like I said, I am just in a crappy basement. I have some home stereo speakers, but they are upstairs, with my home stereo. I guess I am most interested in buying active speakers so I can just run from mixer to speakers without haveing anything in between. I was just wondering if anyone had used these active monitor pairs that are in the $150 range.

Did you just ask the same question again?
