i am looking for a system that will alow me to record at least 6 channels (preferably 8) at once and use a controler/mixer with automation to tweek mixes. what are some great devices for each? what is a midi controler or usb controler? what would be the best recording software? protools? logic? other... i would prefer to keep it all under a grand, but i could blow some on some mic pre's. thanks-ryan

forgot to mention i am using a shuttle ak38n motherboard and an athlon 2400. 512mb memory maxtor 80g hd.

Why don't you check out places like 8thstreet.com to see which soundcard/programs fit your needs/budget. here is a decent bundle with 10 inputs/outputs on the soundcard and automation+many more in the software:

preamps are gonna go over your budget a bit. You could get a used Mackie mixer tho. This one is ending in a day:

Midi/usb controller can be A) a keyboard that transmits midi signal to your computer or B) a mixer that allows you to control your software instead of a mouse. B) is not necessary and is over your budget.

If you want 6- inputs, Pro Tools will be way over your budget, and Logic is mainly for Macs now.

Hope this helps

Al
