Hello everyone,

I've been recording music on PC for the last couple of years, and now I'm thinking of switching to Mac. I need your advice on a good external soundcard for Mac (USB or FireWire - doesn't matter). I mostly record on my own (mic, guitar, and harp) so nothing fancy. Im thinking of buying either E-Mu 0404 USB or Echo's AudioFire 4 (leaning towards the latter).

I also have an old AudioBuddy mic preamp (which is good enough for my needs) and the main question is: would it make sense to buy a card with an built-in preamp (like aforementioned AudioFire 4)? I've heard that the quality of inbuilt preamps in cards under $500 is quite poor, so I'm thinking - would it make sense for me to use the inbuilt preamp on the AudioFire 4 or just stick with my old AudioBuddy and buy AudioFire 2 (with no preamps) instead?

The second question is on studio monitors. I've been always mixing on my 5.1 hi-fi system but now I'd like to switch to monitors instead. Which ones would be best to use? No experience with these whatsoever...

Many thanks!
Alex

I think the question on monitor speakers belongs in another section...sorry.

Thanks, but I've already been through that article before. I know that cards under $500 usually have poor inbuilt preamps - I was just wondering if anyone has ever compared AudioBuddy to AudioFire's preamp to see which one is better...
