I received a shitty Samick guitar. It has an awesome Kelly green paint job, solid body, and maple neck. I want to destroy it and put in all new pickups and a new bridge. I have a Crate Blue Voodoo 120w Head with a matching half stack. And I already own an American made Fender Fat Strat HSS with Duncan Pearly Gate pick ups. Great versatility playing any style I please. I want to put different pickups in the Samick, and gear it toward heavy metal and hard rock. The pickups I'm interested in are the new Seymour Duncan Blackout or Custom, or a Dimarzio X2N for the bridge... And for the neck I am interested in an Air Norton, Liquifire, or the EMG 60.

I have read great reviews on the new SBlackout and Liquifire, and was curious if anyone has experimented with them. I'm pretty set on the Air Norton for the neck, but am not sure thats the pickup for the metal direction I'm going in.

As for the actual bridge. I am sold on a Floyd Rose, but am very curious to see what else is out there.

Thanx

I'll just comment that if you put in the SDs and the FR, you will quadruple the value of that guitar. :D Maybe more! :laughings:

Sorry, I don't have anything constructive to say except good luck with the project! :)

i want to learn how much the tone will improve after the changes.. any photos?

Go for a Gotoh floyd rose, or the Original one. Most all other licensed ones are poor at best imo. Whatever you get make sure it has a steel or brass block, the zinc/pot metal ones just sound dead. Watch the radius too.

As for pickups, again, imo, for metal and rock you want something with a lot of clarity, because the amp is usually doing most of the gain work. If you feed a lot of gain into a lot of gain you invariably get mush (might sound good in the bedroom but will be lost in a band context). I'd recommend something less gainy like a JB or 59, then make your amp do the work. To each his own though obviously. Having a Air Norton in the neck is exactly the concept I am working on - less gain at the guitar = more clarity in the end result.

Samick made some good guitars so you might end up with something really nice. Good luck!

What about some DiMarzio Evolutions (the Steve Vai pickups)?
I've kinda wondered about those for a while... I'm sure they would do alright when geared towards a more metal sound?

Yeah I have an Evo in one of my guitars. It's quite clear and I like it, although it seems to sound better (almost somehow louder) for single note stuff, rather than chugging chords (which makes sense considering Vai's playing style), so I guess it depends on how you play too.
