Hey Guys,

Looking at getting an interface, I have done a bit of reading and homework and like the look of the Emu 1616M PCIe.

Aside from day to day computer sounds, I will only be using it for recording Vocals, no instruments and will be running it through a fairly high end PC running Windows 7 and Cubase.

Is this the best bang for my buck in this price range, or am I way off the mark here?
Any suggestions?

Also Suggestions on a good set of monitors that would suit as well would be appreciated! (Haven't really done any homework on this yet)

Cheers

Well you are seeming to set your budget at a high point. Seems a bit pricey for what you describe as your intended use. But hey, if you have the funds to spend. Get some ADAM S3A monitors too. If you don't like em, send them to me! LOL!

I would figure out what your budget is, weigh that with what your goals are, and include some room treatments into your budget before spending money on an expensive interface. Just my opinion....:D

Yeh, I am willing to spend a few hundred on the interface. I just want to get the absolute best possible recording sound, don't want to cheap out on it. As far as the monitors go I would probably only spend about $300 or so give or take.

If you think this interface is excessive for what IU'm doing any suggestions on a more appropriate one?

IMO, the sound quality difference between a $100 interface and a $700 one will be somewhat inaudible. Yes, some will argue the preamps will make a difference. Even getting into the Apogee Ensemble's is probably not going to give you quality that you can hear without everything else in your input chain being of high quality. Especially if you are using $300 monitors in an untreated room. Your money will be better spent on quality mic's, room treatment and monitors. The quality of the interfaces D/A conversion and preamps are not going to make much difference if your input and listening/recording environment sounds of ass.

Do some research on interfaces that a reviewed as having good 'clean' preamps, 48v phantom power, and at least two XLR inputs to start. You will not find a 'good' stand alone preamp to add color to your vocals anywhere under $500 so don't worry about separate preamps just yet. Just get a decent interface and and a mic first off. Buy used to help with the price. I would try to avoid anything less than KRK Rockit 5's for monitors. You will soon regret saving money there. I am ready to move up from the Rockits myself but they served their purpose. Basic DIY room treatment will cost you around $200 to $300. Do not expect foam or blankets to do what you want at this price. 4" rock wool panels are your best bet.

Cheers for the advice mate, I'll start researching.
