Hi

I have an Audiophile 24/96 in my computer, which I bought years ago.

However I am considering buying the M-Audio Mobile Pre (which comes with Pro Tools MP 9). Is this a good idea or is it unnecessary? The other option I saw was that I could buy this Audio Buddy from M-Audio (MAudio) - Budget Microphone Preamp with line in support and connect it to the soundcard.

I don't have any recording software so the main plus point of buying the Mobile Pre was the fact that it comes with Pro Tools. Just wondering if a newbie could have some advice here as I want to know the best setup to record guitar and vocals! I will be recording MIDI via USB.

Thanks

Wanna save money? Keep what you have and get an ART tube pre and download Reaper.

The M Audio Mobile Pre gets mediocre reviews, at best.
Do you want to be able to control 2 simultaneous tracks at one time (guitar and mic)? Chances of wanting to record more simultaneous tracks in the future?

I second the motion for Reaper as your DAW.

Yeah I want to be able to record 2 tracks at the same time for when I'm doing live recordings. The main thing that drew me to the mobilepre was the fact that the pro tools mp9 that comes with it has so many good features, and the fact that it is very mobile so I can just have it on the side of the desk. As far as I can see the new mobile pre records 24bit, the same as the audiophile. How do you think the sound quality will compare? I have read some good reviews on the mobile pre mk 2 but obviously you guys know what you are talking about which is why I'm asking! :)

Other option I've looked at is connecting an art tube v3 preamp to the soundcard. Only thing is pro tools costs so much! And reaper doesn't seem to have half the features...pro tools comes with lots of prerecorded drum loops to use, instruments, grand piano simulator etc. The drum loops and effects pro tools comes with are the main things steering me towards the mobilepre. Also what do you think if the fast track.pro?

tbf a lot of new audio interfaces come with a free copy of a DAW (normally a stripped down version, i.e PT's MP)

my 2 cents; check out the presonus stuff. pretty cheap, great quality, comes with Studio One Artist (their own DAW) and gig's and gig's of free plugin's, samples, loops etc. Also, the Firestudio mobile has two preamps but has 6 more line in's meaning that if, in time, you want to record more than two things at one you can pick some audio buddy's/art tube's and have up to 8 simultaneous inputs. i think the fire studio mobile is £190 atm (or less maybe, depends where you look)

I've had both the Maudio Audiobuddy (it came with my maudio 24/96 ) and the ART tube pre. for the money, both great little boxes but not really much better than the standard preamps on most audio interfaces nowadays.

Pro Tools 9 MP doesnt feel stripped down. Other than the fact it'll only take 48 tracks, its fully featured. Id say the FX are a step above Reapers too.

I dont know about the moble pre...i use an m-audio omni and a delta card. i like the older m audio stuff, it went through a period of poor reviews but id guess it'll be better than the MPtube. I had the project version of the MP and i wouldnt use it for anything other than guitar or bass, it was a little noisy for vocals...

I love Studio One, but the fact that the Artist version wont host outside VST's wouldnt make it worth it imo, Id say there are better options.

I'd have to recommend you take a look at PreSonus as well. I believe they have a promotion on right now and if you buy a Firestudio or Audiobox you can get a free upgrade to Studio One Producer

Gotta agree ... I have had a Presonus firestudio Project - same great pre-amps ... Have had it for a good couple of years now ... their DAW Studio One 2 is awesome - single app that does a great job of mixing and an integrated Mastering system. Really give Presonus a look ... you won't be sorry
