Well, this is a continuing entry in a series of posts about various pieces of gear that I am learning to use. It's not really intended as a review, more of a perception, you know, what it is good for, or not. I got this unit just to add a bunch of cheap channels to my Digi002 by optical ADAT. For that, it works OK. Are they great channels? No. But they are usable. I'm working on a radio play for a paying customer that needs a lot of simultaneous ins.
So I was thinking- too bad it sends all of the inputs to the optical out. There are applications where I would prefer 8 analog outs. So- I routed the ADAT out to the ADAT in, and voila! 8 analog outs, slaved to itself. It sounds pretty nasty if you push it hard. No surprise, I'm used to the Avalon AD2022, with 32db of headroom remaining when the clip light comes on. Nonetheless, it's a pretty good little box for the price. It should have a simple switch, though, to route the analog ins to the analog outs directly. At least its quiet. What the hell, it will do what I need it to do. I would also prefer it if the mic inputs were in the back, like every other preamp in my rack, but I'll get over it. It's really just for when I'm using every preamp I have, and I still need more channels. -Richie

I plan on getting one

Hi Richie i have Adat blackface & i want to record live..." i posted all this in another thread" my questions where ,, could i use the lightpipe to record direct to the adat then use the chanel out on the adat back to the board
or the ada8000 chanel out to the board for the PA sorta like a splitter
or is there a delay in the ad/da converters that could have an effect...
and so on..
Thanks Karlo

Karlo, I'll be honest. Beats me. I'm not really very familiar with ADAT data transmission. That's why I'm still discovering things that are obvious to real engineers. Give it a shot, I doubt you'll blow anything up. After a couple of months I remain convinced it's a usable box. Not stunning, just usable.-Richie

Thanks Richie i will get one to try it out thanks for your humble feed
some people will write on subject they dont even have & think they know it all
i like honest ansers....
Peace Karlo

I've never claimed to have 'all the answers', just that there is no delay when a lightpipe interface is correctly configured.

Until you get the answer that you want you'll never be satisfied. I should have recognized your type from your confused questions and the defensiveness showed by your followups. You say you like humility. Show a little bit yourself.

I've used the ADAT format since it was first available in the early 90's and own an ADA8000. If that's not enough to let me 'write on subject' than I wasted my time answering your questions.
