adobe audition 3 not picking up sound

akg 220 -> mogami cable -> m audio firewire solo -> firewire port in back of pc (self-install)

i have an e-machine el1300g-02w PC

im trying to get back into making music. it's been a couple years since i hooked all this stuff up.

i also installed asio4all drivers and selected them for multitrack, edit, and the other.

am i having a stoner moment and forgetting somethin miniscule? finally have a free weekend and i am lookin to make it productive, anybody got any pointers?

i am mainly using this to record hip-hop vocals and acoustic guitar. i also have maudio fasttrack usb*** but last time i used that thing it was very static-y

Okay... let's start with basic things:
Are you using XLR to XLR cable?
Is the phantom power turned on?
Can you get the Clip led to light up? (just to see if signal makes it to M-Audio)
Input selector on "Front"?
Is the adapter connected or are you running only on firewire power?

yes, mogami cables, plugged from mic into input

yes, on both firewire and usb i had +48v on

Can you get the Clip led to light up? (just to see if signal makes it to M-Audio)
i noticed it clip more on the usb, but i believe i got it to clip on firewire

Input selector on "Front"?
on firewire, yes, i tried selecting front and rear inputs and nothin

Is the adapter connected or are you running only on firewire power?
and i was only runnin off firewire, is there another cable i have to plug in?

Why asio4all not M-Audio drivers?
i tried downloading the latest drivers and my comp wasnt supported for either usb or firewire

A few thoughts:

First, I'd suggest you use the proper M Audio ASIO drivers (available HERE) rather than ASIO4ALL. ASIO4ALL is a wrapper that lets you use MME devices so they look like ASIO to your DAW. What operating system are you using that you say your computer isn't supported? They have drivers for everything from XP to Win7 (and the Windows 7 drivers should work okay on Windows 8).

Second, you mention selecting ASIO4ALL as your driver but made no mention of selecting your actual sound card in Audition. Under Edit/Audio Hardware set up, right near the bottom of the window should be a drop down menus for default inputs and outputs that need to be selected for the M Audio sound card. If you're on Windows Vista or above, you may need to go to the Windows sound control panel and tell it to use the M Audio as the default sound device. Finally, I've not used your M Audio interface but most of the ones I have used have an M Audio software control panel where you have to tell the system which inputs and outputs to route where.

Beyond that, the suggests for checking the analogue side of things are good ones.

thanks for all the help guys. i am at work so i havent been able to try the suggestions out yet, but i am operating on windows xp like a true caveman. i probably should upgrade after this weekend but aint nobody got time fo dat.

i will download the maudio drivers Bob recommended and will update you with results when i get home. also, when i tried using my fasttrack, i got it to pick up vocals it was just real skippish, which is a horrible adjective, but it would just skip like if i said "that house is super awesome" it sounds like "th- hou- is -er aw-s-m"

Good luck. Don't rush to an upgrade from XP. A lot of audio professionals have deliberately stayed on XP because it is much better suited to DAW work than Vista/7/8.

The skipping on your old interface does sound like a driver issue to me--or a computer cluttered up with lots of rubbish running in background that needs cleaning out.

Actually, that was quite an accurate description of recording software, running on a system that is not set up correctly.

Download the correct drivers for your computer, then setup your computer for audio recording. Google it.
