I'm just getting into attempts to home record. What's the advantages and disadvantages of Adobe Audition 2.0?

Advantages: Simpler than many of the leading audio apps
Superior track editing capabilities
Good built in visual waveform processing tools
Built in mp3 support

Disadvantages: No MIDI support
..And thus, no support for synths
Unstable VST and DXi fx support
Live fx while multitracking is unstable
Not the best summing engine.. at times (note - fairly rarely, and only if I'm taking it to the limits as far as volume adjustments and such, which is bad to do in the first place...) I've noticed odd pops and artifacts appearing out of nowhere and once they're there, it's hard to get rid of them from a multitrack session

In summary - if you're only going to record basic instruments, and don't need MIDI, it is easy to learn and use, but some of the above things could end up frustrating you. On the plus side if your recorded tracks are always noisy, or you want to be able to otherwise edit and master your songs and prep them for cd all in one application, AA is great for that with the ability to switch to a very comprehensive edit view for either individual instruments or a mixdown.

If you want better VST support, a superior sounding mix, MIDI, and a ton of plugins, I suggest Reaper, it's only 40 bucks and support is amazing.

I've never had any of those issues. It sounds like you are having problems with your computer rather than with the program.

Or perhaps I have just used it more intensively than you... the same issues with summing were present with Cool Edit Pro and they have remained.. and the FX bug is only apparent when you try to load a plugin it doesn't like - then it will crash every time you try to refresh the fx list, until the offending plugin is removed. Other audio apps normally let you bypass it, and don't crash. Adobe has never exactly been synonymous with audio anyway, so it's silly of you to assume the problem is with me or my computer rather than the program simply because you've been LUCKY enough never to have any problems with it.

I have put CEP/AA through intensive use for nearly 10 years now, on multiple systems, so I have a pretty good idea of its strengths and weaknesses by now... I made a pretty fair list of those.. if you can't offer an objective input about AA in this thread then you are not helping answer his question. He asked for advantages and disadvantages. I gave them.

Have SONAR 6.0 and Audition 2.0.

I like them both for what they do for me. I start with SONAR for tracking and mixing. Audition for cleaning up and polishing the mix. Audition doesn't have the flow and control I like for tracking but then SONAR doesn't have all the little clean-up tools I like, the way I like them.

It's personal perference

Since I didn't have problems and you did my opinion is not objective? You stated a list of disadvantages as if they are the gospel truth just because you said so. You are the one that is not objective. The world is not just black and white. It's ok to have a different opinion than someone else.

Exactly, you made it sound like you believe AA can't possibly be the source of those problems simply because you haven't experienced them. Which is the very definition of subjectivity actually.

I didn't say anything as if it is gospel truth, but I will not deny that I have substantial experience with the program simply because it hurts your ego. Note that nowhere did I say "AA sucks", every program has its strengths and weaknesses, which is something that you don't seem to be able to accept. If I'm wrong, then so be it, but then perhaps you should have posted your own list instead of bashing mine.

Here's a different angle/

If your just getting into it why spend a bunch of money right off the bat on software? Check out demo's and in the meantime go and download Reaper since you can get started with it for free.

Agreed.

Click/pops are usually computer-related and not related to the software. This could be: RAM/CPU/disk space/disk speed/sample rate & bit depth/FX/lots of tracks, etc.

But it has absolutely nothing to do with "summing".

I agree with all the other points Mistral listed though.

Key word: Usually.

I know the difference between pops caused by struggling hardware, bad buffer settings etc. and what I experienced. This was more like "ghost noises" from the mix itself, like snare hits sounding even when they had been muted from the mix. So yeah it is to do with summing, the audio engine itself inside AA. This does not happen in any other software I've used.

It can't do straight 24 bit recording (only 16 or 32). That, and the lack of MIDI are the two biggests bummers (in my opinion, as I have experienced, only as far as I am concerned, etc.)

Go with Reaper.

Download the demo at Adobe.com ..
I did and I learned that I liked Adobe audition 1.5 and earlier versions better...I hate the way they changed it. And besides I don't need all the extras in the new versions...I mean it had alot more features but I like the old simple interface a lot better Than that new stuff:p... It's a good quick editor..And easy to use
