I was thinking about picking one of these up as a main mic. I have an SM58 and im getting an Mackie Onyx 400F for my laptop with logic studios. I dont really have a studio or anything but i want a nice mic to record with. I need to record Vocals and Acoustic Guitar mostly but id also like to be able to mic my bass cabinet when i feel like it. I hear the Hamburg would do a great job for all 3 applications. What do you guys think? Is there there a better mic for doing all 3 jobs? Should i get the Vienna or the Hamburg? If i end up getting this mic and have money for a third mic what do you guys think would be another nic mic to have for what im doing?

From what I understand you can eq the Vienna just a bit to get it to sound like a Hamburg but you can't eq the hamburg to sound like the Vienna. I read this review somewhere I just can't remember where but this is why I went with the Vienna. They are very similar though so either would work great. Honestly I think these are the best mics for the price they are going for right now and a great choice :)
I love mine!

If i were you I'd save for an sm7b next.

I was originally thinking of getting an SM7B but from what ive read the vienna or hamburg would be more well suited for also micing acoustic and bass. I also read the same review about Eqing the vienna like the hamburg but not the other way around. I read a review saying they were poorly designed to sit in the shockmount and they often fall out if your position them at weird angles. Is this true or something thats an easy fix? Also i dont understand the difference between the black and silver bodied one.

If you go tothe ADK website, they have a forum where you can get very clear and specific answers to your questions...they are very friendly/helpful there.

I've had the ADK TT-CE for a few years now...it's my main vocal mic.

While I never tried either the Vienna or Hamburg, I've wanted a pair of Hamburgs for awhile now.

Yeah the shockmounts are somewhat troublesome. I've found a great solution by using some heavy-duty large rubber bands in place of the stock bands that come with it. Doesn't look quite as good but who cares, sounds great and holds the mic better.

Well I would probably use the sm7b before the Vienna for micing a bass cab, but go for the Vienna on acoustic. It all depends if you want a condenser or a dynamic. Both great mics.

Thanks for the rubber band tip. Id rather have the mic more geared for vocals and acoustic then bass but i want it to do all 3 pretty well. The SM7B does look like a third mic to get one if i can afford it.

Another option to your basic rubber bands...and don't anyone laugh...if you check out the hair care section of any bigger stores where they have a good selection, you can find hair ties that have the woven nylon around the multi-stranded rubber bands inside so they are like mini-bungee ties.
They are a good replacement.
You can find them in different sizes...they even have longer ones that you can loop twice for heavier mics.

There's also by-the-foot small diameter "bungee" style cord you can find at most craft shops or fabric/sewing shops...you just need the small metal crimps to attach/secure the cut ends...but you can then make them to your exact size.

I suggest going with the multi-strand "bungee" style over basic rubber bands because they don't break as easy, and because they are multi-strand rubber bands inside the woven nylon, even if one breaks, you won't lose the mic like you can with a single rubber band...but hey, I've used the rubber bands too when there's nothing else available!!! :D

So shines a bright light....

oops, meant to quote that, so much for Wonka cleverness

I've had both mics for several years. While I've never tried to make one sound like the other, they both EQ very well. As I recall, the Vienna was designed for female vocals and higher register instruments, while the Hamburg was designed for male vocals and the like. Both work well on many different applications, depending on what you need.

As far as the shock mount, I hang the mics upside down and have never had any trouble. Go figure! ;-)

I don't think you'll go wrong with either mic. Very nice mics at reasonable prices.

thanks for the response. I have a male vocalist but il probably go with whichever is better for micing acoustic guiar (martin) which would probably be the vienna, correct?

Of those two mics, that's the one I would try first. But without hearing the guitar that's just a guess based on the fact that most every Martin I've heard has a tendency to be darker sounding (as opposed to something like a Taylor). So the Vienna might be a good mic to offset that darker sound. But without hearing the guitar in your room, that's just speculation.

Best of luck!

Just thought id follow up on this thread. I ended up buying the Hamburg and have been using it for a while. I'm pretty happy with it. I was very impressed with the way the vocals came out and it worked pretty well on guitar as well. My only wish is that i could do guitar in stereo but that has nothing to do with the quality of this mic. I tried micing my bass cabinets several different ways and i just didnt like any of the sounds i got. Same goes for my Shure SM58 and i have an EV broadcasting mic. DI is just the way to go unless you have a much higher quality mic, perhaps a ribbon?

Glad to hear you like the Hamburg, Jesse. I've been quite pleased with the sound and versatility of mine.
