Well.... not really broken, but when I opened it the end cap was not screwed on to the mic body.

Apparently the mic grill, diaphragm assembly, and guts are all one piece, with the threaded XLR jack at the other end. There is a cylinder shape metal tube that goes over the guts, and the end cap screws on to the threads that are exposed at the bottom of the cylinder when the guts are fully inserted.

But the cylinder was too long or something, and the end cap would not screw on to the threads. It was not on when I cut open the shipping box and opened the mic case.

I figure that's a sign of a QC problem, and I returned it for a full refund. The seller (fullcompass) even offered to send me a UPS slip to cover return shipping costs. Nice enough. I really wanted to test that mic, but QC issues are a definite left turn in my plans!

I guess I shoulda been bidding on that AT4040 on ebay after all...!!

There's a notch at the top of the body that meets up with an alignment tab under the lip of the grill housing. Did you make sure that was lined up? It makes about 1/8" difference.

Agreed. That AT4040 endedup selling for just over $200 bucks, but there are a couple of 4033's out there right now that are just as tempting. I've only rented AT mics in the past, never owned one. I'm over due.

Yeah, the notch lined up and then the guts kind of slip down in another 1/8th of an inch and it turns just a hair to snap in place. It wont go any farther than that because the rolloff and pad switches are in the way then.

Is there supposed to still be a gap of about 1/8th inch in the band where the switches are when the thing is fully assembled?? I could have missed something..... I still have it at the office, I will toy with it again int he morning just to make sure, but I could not figure any way to get it more "together" than it was.....

All the photos I can find online show a small gap about an 1/8th inch wide where the switches are sitting.

If you want a Hamburg stick to your guns, have them send you another one, things like this happen to every company, it'd be rare for it to happen twice.
