Well.... not really broken, but when I opened it the end cap was not screwed on to the mic body.
Apparently the mic grill, diaphragm assembly, and guts are all one piece, with the threaded XLR jack at the other end. There is a cylinder shape metal tube that goes over the guts, and the end cap screws on to the threads that are exposed at the bottom of the cylinder when the guts are fully inserted.
But the cylinder was too long or something, and the end cap would not screw on to the threads. It was not on when I cut open the shipping box and opened the mic case.
I figure that's a sign of a QC problem, and I returned it for a full refund. The seller (fullcompass) even offered to send me a UPS slip to cover return shipping costs. Nice enough. I really wanted to test that mic, but QC issues are a definite left turn in my plans!
I guess I shoulda been bidding on that AT4040 on ebay after all...!!
