Hello

Here in England I can get two A51SC's for the price of one MC 0-12 (1 cap).

I read one thread where someone stated that the A51sc was a small step up from the Oktava for acoustic guitar. Would others agree with this?

I intend to use a stereo pair to mainly record my bongos, but would also use them on acoustic guitar too and a selection of other instruments. Are the ADK's suited to percussion?

Do you think for £120 (about $180) the ADK's are the best bet? I am also considering the SP C4 (pair) and the Rode NT5 (pair), but these are also over twice the price! The other SD condensers I have found for £60 each are Beyer's MCE530 (same as Opus53).

Also, what are the opinions of ADK mics, as I am considering a Tube for vocals (I currently use a SP C1) and the A51tc at £300 ($450) seems pretty good? Others I am interested in, in the same range (£200 - £300) are the Oktava MKL2500, Studio Projects T3 & TB1, SE Electronics SE5500 and many of the Groove Tubes models. Are the ADK's generally better than the SE Electronics? Has anyone tried the new AT3060 yet?

Cheers

I own a pair of MC012s, and I have tried an ADK A51SC. I never compared the two tho.

The ADK had quite an odd sound to my ears. We compared it to Rode NT3, AKG C1000S and Line Audio CM2. The ADK and Line Audio was the winners, but two very different winners. (drum overheads, nothing else). The Line Audio had beautiful highs, but couldn't give the toms enough lows. The ADK made the toms sound killer, but lacked the highs of the Line Audio.

I bought a pair of Line Audio CM2s, to compliment my Oktavas. But next time I buy SD condensers, the ADK A51SC is HIGH up on my list.

And a question for you. Where do you find the ADK mics at those prices?

Well, neither of the big British chains (Academy Of Sound and Digital Village ) seem to stock them, so they're out.
Say, Meshuggah, what do you think about the idea of using the ADK A51s as close mics for toms? After reading what you said it seems like a good idea.

Hi Chaps.

Turnkey are the only stockists in the UK (according to them). The prices seem fantastic, even cheaper than the US in some instances I think!? The new A48 (Tube) is only £550!

Meshuggah: So do you think the ADK's will do well on bongos? Also, are they prone to stand rumble, making the optional shockmounts a good idea? I can get a pair of the shockmounts shipped to the UK for $64!?

I am pleased to hear that at least a few folks out there are trying 'different' mic brands. Has anyone tried the Red5 RV4's? They are £100 for a pair too!

Cheers

I have used the A51 (not sc) for acoustic guitar and it does a excellent job, I prefer it to my Earthworks TC30Ks for that purpose. I have not used it on toms or bongos but it also does a superb job as a close mic for the snare drum

As said, I have only used the A51SC as an overhead once. If I *think* it will be good for bongos would be a totally useless guess from me.

Please note that ADK A51, A51S and A51SC are different microphones. I think ADK seriously screwed up on naming the different mics.

Actually the A51s and A51 are the same. "S" just means it is the one that comes with the flightcase and shockmount. Also the SC is actually called the SC-1. It seems to be their top of the line small diaphram condenser.

Just so you know there are different varieties of the A51. The Type V was the current incarnation until the new Type VI came along recently it looks much different than the previous ones.

I hope that helps. Try going to the website if you need more clarification. http://www.adk.cc/

I just looked at the Turnkey site and could see neither hide nor hair of any ADKs. Where are they?

Beezoboy: I think you will find that the SC-1 and A51sc are different mics. The A51sc being from the higher range (the audiophile range I think they call it)? I'll check in a second!

Mark: Yeah, I don't think Turnkey update their website very often. They do sell them, I've seen em in there. Also, they are on their ad in SOS and in their free instire brochure.

The A51 (A51s) are LD and the A51sc (and SC-1) are SD mics.

Oh, just looked as the ADK website again. The A51sc is also called the SC-T, and is from the Audiophile series. The SC-1 is from the cheaper Studio series.
