It needs more cowbell!
Anyone have any experience with this mic? Heard positive/negative things about it? Know anyone that has heard anything about it? I'm not finding much in the way of reviews, just stores selling them...

Thanks!

I did not hear one for myself but I did do some research on the subject. There are several different versions of this mic. The 51, 51S with a roll off and a higher SPL. There are sonic matched pairs etc..... To me they just seemed to be an expensive China made mic( they claim the parts are from Germany) @$199 and $299 selling prices. I think the matched pairs go around $750. As I said I didn't hear them myself but those I talked to said the MXL 67 @99 was a much better deal. Also for the same money you could get an AT 4033 for $299 or a 3035 for $199. I have the V67 and the 3035 and I'm happy so far.

I have 4 of them. 2 A51TCs (Tube Cardiod) and 2 TLs (Solid-state Multi-pattern). The TCs are excellent mics, extremely detailed and smooth, comparing quite favorably (though not quite as good) with my Neumann M149s. The TLs are rather ho-hum - I'd say not quite as good as my AT 4050s. For most purposes, I would take a TC over a 414, TLM103, 4033, 4050... frankly almost any LD in the studio with the exception of the M149s and Brauner VM1 KHE. If you need a multipattern, skip the TLs - you can do just as well (or even better) for the same money or less from other people ( like Studio Projects).

I tried the plain jane model once. I was helping a friend of mine in the studio he works at and they were auditioning them at the time. We tried it on anacoustic and it was great sounding. The other engineers there apparently liked them as well.

Thats all I know,

I've got a basic a-51 on loan for 7 days. I tried it with 2 different male vocals and 3 different acoustic guitars, and wasn't unhappy with the sound quality. That having been said, I'm still interested in hearing what others think-if I buy it, it's gonna be a $200 mic. I'm going to be doing vocals, acoustic guitars, and probably micing the amp for my electrics. Is this the way to go, or can I do better for my $200?

Would I be better served taking this mic back and getting a pair of SP B1's or a pair of v67's? Or, should I take this one back and grab the matched pair of A-51's on eBay that are about the same price as I would pay for this single?

i'd either go for 2 B1's or get the a51's off ebay.. i was gonna order that same set and use one of the mics as my talk back mic and the other one for something...i use a se 5000 and a tlm103 right now for vocals

This thread came at a perfect time as I'm seriously thinking of an A-51s. With the reviews and testimonials I've read and the names associated with this mic, I just have to try one(unless I'm convinced otherwise...

Well...I bought the matched set of A-51's. I think I'll order an SP C1 as well, and see what i like and dislike about each mic. I like the idea of being able to record in stereo when necessary...but I also like everything I've heard about the C1.

I'm gonna end up keeping 3 mic's, aren't I? Oh well...:-)
