Not sure if this thread belongs in the drum forum or not, I put it here because of an earlier thread entitled "Your Approach to Recording Drums".

A lot of folks in that thread mentioned adding reverb to their drum tracks as a finishing touch. What I don't understand is which parts of the kit need reverb, and how much for each part? Do cymbals get more than the snare, etc. Is there a standard approach most people use?

My recordings will probably rely on drum machine sounds for quite some time so I will be able to apply reverb selectively before mixing down.

Thanks.

The snare reverb really defines the space of a song. That is probably the most important.

Then do whatever sounds good on the others. If you want a more natural sound then put a little bit on everything but the kick. Even a little reverb on the kick is okay if your doing jazz or blues.

A gated reverb gives you that big Phil Collins/Genesis drum sound. A little bit of room reverb can also help fatten up the sound. A hall on the snare can work for slower songs.
