Hello guys and girls,

I've recently unearthed an old Tascam Portastudio 424 mkiii and I'm just in love with it, for the longest time I've just been using my Macbook and a copy of Pro Tools a friend gave me, Pro Tools is all well and good but recording on this machine is just way to fun.

So my question is, because this machine does have any stereo sends/returns for any FX I was wondering how I would run my compression/gate into it. Would it just be a case of Microphone > Compressor > Tascam? I'm not a professional engineer, I literally take my gear to practice sessions with mates who are in bands and we mess about a record demos but I just want to see what I can do in terms of FX since a little bit of compression and reverb would give it a big boost. Now I've mentioned reverb, in this set up would I just daisy chain the FX together like you would on a guitar pedal board

Mic > Compressor > Reverb > Tascam

You professionals out there must be able to help me with this!

Yes. Pretty much as you've described.

Since the 424mkII has no "inserts", and a compressor is an inline effect, then you'd hook it up Mic>Compressor>Tascam.

The Effects Sends are useful for any effect that can be used in a side-chain (effects loop), such as reverb/echo/delay, but not for compression. A compressor should go inline to the signal.

Certain other Portastudios and many other standalone mixers give you insert patch points, as well as other features you won't find on the 424mkII, but the 424mkII is an excellent & fun machine in it's own right!

Party On!
:spank::eek:;)

Thanks man! It has two FX loops so I should be able to add my FX through those, I'm only doing demos so it's not a major issue but I do love a bit of reverb!

Hey man, do you know how to get an owners manual for this thing? It's such a beautiful machine but I can not figure it out

Shoot I was thinking mkII as well, that is actually the manual I need to find but have not been able to
