Adding effects on recording

Hi all - I'm a newbie to all this stuff and got Cool Edit Pro as a gift. Trying to record my Fender Strat via Soundblaster 5.1 Live! - all is well until I start to mess around with effects and get nothing. Does CEP not allow me to hear the effects first or do I record the "clean" track first, then add effects.

Anyone help me as to the best way of recording using the above or suggest alernative easy way or home recording???

Record the track first. Add effects later.
