adding distortion

Hi Guys and Gals

I tried recording my guitar with a clean sound onto cool edit, no matter how much i adjust the distortion the sound is too distorted and doesnt even sound like a guitar, it also means that you just hear noise instead of chord changes etc.........HELP!!!!!

So is this the distortion effect in Cool Edit / Audition? If so, I've never seen it mentioned without the phrase "it's not very good" being used....
