I am trying to get away from drum machines and saw a tutorial on Addictive drums software and thought it sounded pretty good. It was very informative on how to create custom kits but It never mentioned in the tutorial how to actually program your own songs. The Addictive drums will be the only software i will be using in my studio set up for now. I do not have a DAW. My work station is a Boss BR900.

I guess my question is, What all do I need to purchase to be able to program/create drum tracks for my own original songs? Obviously, the drum software and a PC but what about a midi keyboard? Is this a must?

A complete list of must haves for this would be greatly appreciated.....Thanks

AD Software

I've been using Addictive Drums for the past year and a half or so and I love the software. I did a session with a "pro" drummer, Recording the same song using him on the kit and then again using AD. I highly preferred the software, so much easier to deal with and edit than the live drummer. Especially in a home studio environment. You can do editing with your computer and a pair of headphones pretty much any time during the day.

As far as what you will need, A MIDI interface and keyboard will be very useful to you, but not entirely necessary. AD comes bundled with songs/beats/fills that you can drag into your MIDI sequencer of choice and create songs. I actually use a cheap Pintech Electronic drum kit to track the MIDI data into my DAW. Hope this helps!

I believe AD are just like EZDrummer, which I'm familiar with. You would need a DAW program like Cubase, Sonar, etc, to host AD. You can use edrums or a midi keyboard to trigger AD, or simply use the midi files that come with it. These will be canned grooves that probably just drag and drop into place in your song. You can also create your own or edit the groove files using the midi editor in the DAW.

But because AD, EZDrummer, Steven Slate Drums, etc are VSTi's, you need a hosting program to use them. That would mean switching your method of recording to a computer. Or... ezdrummer has a free download that allows you to run the VSTi without a DAW program. You could write your drum parts on the computer and somehow transfer them to your BR900. Not sure how well that would work.

My plan is to create the drum track, convert it into a wave file and import it to the BR900.
The Boss website has a Driver i can DL for importing wav files so thats not a problem So i guess i would still need a DAW?

I have never used a DAW but I think this is what im going for? What do ya think? I'm such a Noob and don't want to spend money on something i cant use in my set up.

Yeah, I hear ya. If AD works in Reaper, that would certainly fit into your workflow. Reaper isn't free, but the license is extremely generous. I'm pretty sure Reaper has full midi editing. That will allow you to change up the typical drum machine feel by throwing in a lot of details and make your drum tracks sound more human. I find drum track editing the most enjoyable part of using virtual drums.

have fun

Yah, you should probably start your own thread instead of hijacking others'.

Okay so I Downloaded the Demo of Addictive drums and ran it on reaper with no issues. The AD Demo is very limited with a hand full of beats and a 5 piece kit. For those who have the full version of AD, can you tell me if it has the feature of programing your own Beats, Fills, etc... For the purpose of originals?
