Add a condenser or get a totally new pair?

Hi,

I use an at3035 (LDC) as a single OH right now, but I plan to advance to stereo drum recording. It's impressive how one mic can sound so good, but the recordings lack space. I love the sound of the one mic, so should I just get another 3035?

I've noticed that a lot of people use SDCs when using stereo overheads. Is there something wrong or difficult about using LDCs in stereo?

Ultimately the plan is to use two OHs and have kick/snare mics.

Thanks,

JD

If you're not using tom mics, I'd get another 3035. How do you like the sound with just the one mic? Is it too bright or dark? Do you get a good balance of cymbals and drums?

The problem with using two small diaphragm condensers is that they don't really pick up the toms as well as the cymbals or they make the cymbals more aggressive sounding.

If you're not happy with the 3035, by all means try some SDC's.

I would keep the mic and get a new pair...Either SP B1's, a pair of MXL 603s', or a pair of Oktava MK012's. But that's just what I would do - mostly cause I don't particularly like the AT3035 myself, but I can see it would still have uses for you.

Interesting - you mentioned both an LDC (the B1) and SDCs (the 603 and MK12) as your overheads of choice. Was that in order of preference?

P.S. I'm particularly fond of the 3035, but it's probably because I haven't played with a lot of LDCs. I will say that I had the MXL990/991"studio pak" for about a day and thought that both of those mics sounded extremely brittle. I returned them and bought a 57, which I am very happy with, expecially for micing a guitar cabinet real up-close and personal-like.

Indeed, if I hit the cymbals a little softer and the toms a little harder, I get a nice balance. The quality of sound seems very true...or even a little better than real life.

I would love to just demo a pair of the new AT2021s to see how they do because they're so cheap and I'm already impressed with AT's wares.

I'm an idiot..... "AT" is that audio technica? I'm interested in recording with just one over head for some scratch track.... I might check out what you're using now... Thanks :)
