Is it possible to have digital recording, with an analouge warmth?

What I was thinking of doing is getting an Adat machine or two and hooking them up some way that what i am recording goes onto tape, but from tape on the computer ...

Is this possible? or would I have to record on tape, then dump to pc?

ADAT is still digital recording. However, I think things I've recorded to ADAT do sound warmer (maybe alittle) than things I record through Layla into Cakewalk (I really don't know if it the converters or what).

There are many people that argue that digital recording when done properly can be just as warm as analog - and I have no doubt they are correct. Obviously, useing certain preamps in the signal chain to the computer can make a big difference.

For conveniance I normally record direct to Cakewalk - but on certain projects (ie: I'm being paid to produce the best possible sound) I will link the ADAT to Cakewalk - and put the vocals and certain guitar parts (in particular accoustic guitar) on the ADAT.

I still prefer the convenience of computer recording (I hate to shuttle tape all day long.

ADAT *is* digital recording.... and this nonsense about "cold digital, warm analog" is exactly that - nonsense.

It's about as useless as saying "tube good, solid-state bad"..........

There are cheap tube designs that sound horrible and there are cheap digital units that sound horrible... good digital gear will give you EXCELLENT results, cheap analog gear will give you horrible results............
