I'm really new at recording. I've got a little experience with a four track and the computer. I want to set myself up for recording at home -- I'm a drummer/singer and I work with a guitarist/bassist who uses an ADAT and mixes on his computer. I'd like to be compatable with him. I'm wondering what would be my best option, what are the differences, ups and downs of using either ADAT or a hard drive digital recorder. I was thinking of going with the ADAT and buying a mixer. Any suggestions!
Thanks.

For the application you state; if you allready have a decent computer at home you are probably better off going the hard drive route, all you need is a good card and the software of your choice, you can use your stereo to monitor.
You would be creating .wav files which you should be able to
copy and download to your friends computer where it could be
mixed or he could drop it to yours and you both could mix it and take the best. I have an adat and I like the portability of it an I have a mackie mixer and I do like the old teqnique of turning knobs, but I download into the
computer to mix. I am by far an expert on this stuff so doublecheck, no triplecheck everthing.

ADAT vs. hard drive

What if I don't have a reliable computer. My computer is definitely the family computer, and honestly I have had problems with it. Would it be better to go with a "hard disk/drive" porta-studio than the computer, or try the ADAT. Again I am really new at this, but I am doing research. Thanks for your help.

I couldnt answer that but maybe you should think about getting a better PC. There are better minds here than mine and I am sure if you just hang in there you will get some
more answers, in the meantime keep up the research and use
the search function here to look up some of the equip etc
you have questions on. I do love my adat though. My friend
just bought the new fostex stand alone digital deal, I dont
think he has his system up and running yet though, will check.
