hi people, can someone give me some info on ADAT soundcards please. i've just had it clarified by BEHRINGER i can use the ULTRAGAIN PRO ADA8000 as an audio interface as long as i have an ADAT compatible soundcard. so could i have some advice on models, prices etc. are they also PCI or USB ???????????

anybody frowning at my choice of weapon? im thinking of using the ADA8000 as it has the same features as most audio interfaces but is far cheaper. which enables me to get spend on better mics. my other option is the ST AUDIO DSP3000? what think? i'm also after low latency and i'll be using mainly outboard gear.

"tallie ho"

ULTRAGAIN PRO ADA8000 is a ADAT card which sends 8 channels to your soundcard through ADAT connectors also known as light pipes. You cannot use it as a stand alone soundcard, you need some soundcard with ADAT facility, Mostly all the high end cards have this facility. Usually they are either PCI or Firewire.
If you look in the ULTRAGAIN PRO ADA8000 specs, it says sample rates 44.1,48Khz, which means you cannot record anything above 48Khz. Considering this I would suggest any of the old motu PCI audio interfaces like MOTU 2408 MKII or original MKI which you can get for a very reasonable price on ebay. Also it is expandable to many many inputs. I have worked on Motu's with AdAT for a long time and never had any problem.

The ADA8000 is an Analog to Digital converter. It converts 8 channels of analog audio to digital, and sends them via an ADAT lightpipe connection.

I'm purchasing one for the MOTU 2408 MKII that I just bought. You can also check out the RME line of equipment, specifically the Digi 9652 or the 9652 light models which can be had for around $250 on ebay i believe.

thanks for input guys,

So light pipe???? is this a diditail lead of some sort? does it carry so many channels down one lead (like a MIDI lead)?

Yes, the ADAT 8-channel digital interface protocol is called LightPipe. It is carried over an Optical cable, and is capable of carrying 8 channels of audio at once.

no its starting to make sense cheers guys.

so once the sound has got to the ADAT souncard recorded onto it ,could i then send the data back thru the interface to a mixing desk add effects and stuff via the inserts take a digitial or line out and send that to an stand alone cd recorder?

You most certainly could. You could also mix and add effects on your computer, and then just burn a CD. The possibilities are endless...

so wait... can someone name some cards where if you had JUST the card you could put a box like this to it? like.. the delta 1010? or echo layla? or something? just want to make sure i understand what you're all talking about

as you can tell i don't know everything about this myself as i started the post. but as far as i'm aware the DELTA 1010 and the ECHO LAYLA come with an ADAT soundcard (and maybe a software multitrack?) as they record about 8 simultaneous tracks.
as i said i'm a noob so i might not be 100% right
