Hi to you all!
I've just bought an ADAT LX20 and its ADAT-Edit PC card (for 1300€).
I've found that it only runs under win98.
I've got a 1.300MHz athlon pc with 512MB RAM and 2 15GB disks.

My goal is to record 8 tracks per time directly on pc, using the adat as a A/D converter.

Can I do it?
will the win98 memory management allow me to use all my 512MB of RAM?
Should I change the pc soundboard with something XP compatible? (any suggestion?)

Thanx in advice

Why??

You should have bought an Multi channel soundcard like a delta 1010.

Otherwise use the Adat and transfer it to PC via optical lightpipe, in which case stick with win 98.

You can use The ADAT as an A/D converter but you'll need a software program like cubase and setup the adat/edit card for 8 channel recording.

Just curious...why use the lightpipe to transfer? Does this mean you dump your 8 tracks into the computer where it's saved, in turn feeing up the 8 tracks on the Adat giving 16 tracks? Probably a simple question, but anything regarding computers is confusing to me.

We've choose the ADAT for 2 main reason:
first of all, we can use it also to record gigs.
second, it is new (it has been used 3-4 times at the Music Accademy).

WE've now come to the decision to keep our ADAT and to give back the ADATedit soundcard.

What we need now is a soundcard with ADAT optical and SYNC connectors.
No matter multiple i/o.

On the software side, we use CUBASE VST. (with the option of an SX or NUENDO upgrade)

The question is: which soundcard should we buy?

----------

After some net research I've found that the Hammerfall LE could be the right choice.
it has toslink and adat sync. plus it's the same board of nuendo 96/52.
Am I in the right path?

well you made a good decision giving back the adat/edit card they suck!

Hammerfall is the go, you can run XP with it now i think, but there are a few good choices.

And wolf you can do that sort of thing, the best way is to record to 7 tracks, drop them to PC then mix down a guide track onto the eighth track thats free on the ADAT and record all your overdubs. that way they will all sync up perfectly.

I would have made the right decision giving back the ADATedit card... BUT we can't give it back!!! grrrr
so... bye bye hammerfall :-(
we gotta deal with the ADATedit and win98

Now
we have 2 problems both dealing with synchronization
1st: when we open the ADATconnect program the LX logo appears on the ADAT display and begins to flash untli we unplug it or shut down the program.
2nd: while flashing it shows these two codes: CAL P9 and CAL BRAC. The manual says that the RAM is f**ed up.

anyone knows what's going on?

heeelp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't help ya. What I can tell you is that a friend of mine tried using the Adat/edit card a couple years ago, on Windows 98, and once it was installed it rendered his computer worthless to running any other applications-internet, other programs, anything. I have not heard many sucess stories with this card.

Win 98 is fine i was using it for years and if your stuck with the adat/edit card its not worth you buying a new card JUST so you can run a newer platform (you can run ME)

make sure you power up the adat and the PC in the right order (which i forget now!)

Or it could be flashing because of the calibration problems (CAL P9 and CAL BRAC)

Dont worry i doubt if its the ram the same thing happened to my adat turned out it was the braking system and had to replace the motor (which is nearly as bad and would seriously consider returning the unit or getting some king of refund for repairs!)
Cost me about $300 AUD

As far as using the adat as a A/D converter (im assuming you want this because there are no anolog inputs/output on the adat/edit card, check if you can run two soundcards on your system with anolog I/O) you might want to try the Emagic adat/edit software and make sure the adat/edit driver is version 2.0

Also try running the ADAT machine as master.

Try anything and everything!!!!

But you need to get that ADAT serviced first!
